Forums - Sales - VG Chartz' Japan numbers: dishonest?

A lot of people responding to this thread seem to be confusing “dishonest” with “inaccurate”. Perhaps I should make my original point – and the basis for it – clearer.

I am not for one moment suggesting that VGC’s Japan numbers are particularly inaccurate. My speculation (and those that say I have no real evidence [other than circumstantial] for it are right – that is often the nature of speculation) was that it may be dishonest for VGC to present such numbers as independently obtained, as it seems they could just be based on Famitsu and Media Create’s data. The reason for such speculation was that VGC’s Japan numbers always come out after Famitsu and MC publish without ever varying much from them. Many have said that this is because VGC’s independently obtained numbers must be accurate, and while that is a possibility, it strikes me as statistically unlikely: if different researchers use different sample sources of different sizes, we would expect to see quite different results at least some of the time. We see this in the discrepancies between NPD and VGC figures for the US. That we don’t ever see them with Japan’s figures is what makes me suspicious.

Now if VGC were to start publishing their Japan numbers before Famitsu and MC, I would of course have to eat humble pie. Though I doubt in such a scenario we would still see such closely matching figures.

this used to happen and I already pointed this out in a previous post.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

And how close were the numbers?

They weren't all that far off. Plus, VGC does release preliminary data several days early and you haven't addressed that issue. Yes, that data isn't nearly as accurate, but that is what you get when you try to make early guesses with limited data. If VGC was simply faking the numbers, as you suggest, then there wouldn't be a Japan preview at all.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

It is possible that because the market is smaller the numbers are less likely to be to far apart, also as they may or may not have a large sample they may us other numbers as guide to adjust sample.

This is in no way is dishonest just trying to give the best numbers possible also this would not make them based on anyone elses numbers how do you think any other tracking company does it also they adjust using console makers yearly, half yearly ect. numbers.

Erm... VGC Japan figures usually come out BEFORE Media Create, and on occasion before Famitsu. The only reason the schedule is off kilter is a lot of focus on VGC 2.0 (redesign of the website)

How exactly does ioi manage to get in the middle of the two when he releases before the other two trackers, or before at least 1 of them.

Or how do you explain the Japan preview, which is usually relatively accurate (not so much on hardware but that is usually not based on actual figures like the software is)

I have re-read my post and it does not quite tell what i wanted to say if you get numbers from 50 retailers out of 5000 you can muiltipli by 100 or taking in to account retailer different market share.

you can use any other number that will give best est.

Or you can breakdown retailers in to groups to best mirror the market then work out how many retailers fit each group.

Both will give you end numbers both are est. only.

so how you refine your numbers is up to you some will be better than others all are still est. also time of year could change how you go about it.

They were generally within the same accuracy as they are now. So similar, but not the same. There are a few particular differences.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

how is that dishonest. If the numbers are right then it can't be dishonest.

That's like if I sell 10 CD's and somebody puts on their website I sold 10 CD's. It's true ,how can it be dishonest?

Accuracy alone isn't enough. He's intimating that there's plaigarism going on here, and that would be dishonest. What else can you call it when someone takes your work without giving you any credit for it?

If PS3 doesn't win the week then I agree.
