There are some RPG's that don't have world maps, only "battle" areas and city areas

| Xen said: Roam the battlefield, but not the game world :P Sure ARPG's are also different, but theres much less micromanagement there, wouldn't you say? |
But again, if you're trying to define JRPG's by the amount of micromanagement then woudn't you have to take out games with tons of characters and where positioning matters (Suikoden).
Basically it makes the most easy sense to me like this:
JRPG's are RPG's from Japan, and within that genre there are 3 different battle systems that are common:
Turn-based RPG
Action RPG
Strategy RPG
...
1. FF7
2. Lunar Silver Star Story
3. Xenogears
4. FFX
5. Vagrant Story
yes my catalogue is actually very one-sided...
In no order
FFIV/Secret of Mana
Golden Sun/TLA
Tales of Symphonia
Chrono Trigger
Pokemon Gold/Silver

Hmmmmm:
1) Lunar the Silver Star
2) Final Fantasy VII
3) Grandia II
4) Lost Odyssey
5) The Dark Wizard (Sega CD game that I think only I played)
I'm sure I'm forgetting some really good ones (Shadow Hearts Covenant was great too), but those were the first 5 that came to mind. And the Phantasy Star series...great stuff there too!
In no particular order:
EarthBound
Mother 3
Final Fantasy XII
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
Final Fantasy VI
1) Secret of Mana (no nostalgia, currently playing)
2) Chrono Trigger
3) Golden Sun
4) Terranigma, Illusion of Time (Tie)
5) FFVII, FFVI
