Miyamoto confirmed that he has been telling both the Zelda team and Mario team that he feels that Twilight Princess and Galaxy didn't feel fresh enough and to focus on branching out with the new titles.

A sequel is coming whether it be Galaxy 2 or not.

This is because Miyamoto said he would love to make a SMG sequel (or something like that)

Hopefully Nintendo will decide to make a new Mario game this gen.

Unfortunately with Nintendo's focus on evergreen titles i doubt we will see a new mario game this year or even next year unless the game is completely different to super mario galaxy.

Reggie said at last E3 that the Mario-team were hard at work. Of course, it doesn't mean they're making a new Mario-game, just a new game (though it's fair to assume it's a new Mario-game). Also:

"In the 1,000th issue of Famitsu, Miyamoto stated his interest in making a sequel to Super Mario Galaxy. Producer Koizumi said in a GameSpot interview that there is a "really high chance" several power-ups and suits that did not make it into Super Mario Galaxy would be used in the sequel."
