Forums - General Discussion - Why do we call it soccer?

I've always wondered why Americans called Football, Soccer. It doesn't even make sense... >_>

And then our Football, you hardly even use your feet at all?

So, where/when did this all start?

soccer is a british term for association football.  We use it because we already have a better form of football

What skip said. It's actually the British you have to blame for Americans calling it soccer. It started in prestigious English universities and circulated to other countries, when those countries had created their own version of Football, like America, Ireland and Australia.

Yeah, you take the soc out of as'soc'iation football, this is where it comes from. but it is a very tenuously related term soccer is. Why Americans don't call it football I don't know? as opposed to that game they play with their hands called football, hmmm

Again, blame the British. They started it.

Fine. It just always seems to be British people complaining about the word soccer being used in other countries. Take the blame and live with it for the next couple of hundred years until the world explodes.

Also why is it always Americans that get blamed exclusively? I don't see a tirade on Australians and Irish people calling it soccer ever, just those dastardly imperialistic Americans.
