Forums - Gaming - Xbox720/PS4-Bypassing Blu-Ray For Holography

I heard many ways about not using this but how If they use as hard drive alternative since these disk can go up 1TB if you look on wikipedia. Also note read and write times are faster than most storage media.

Also Nintendo is not using this tech they have a patent on slightly different tech.

Blu Ray will still be used next gen.

Didnt pioneer say they could get 1TB out of a Bluray disc? Why would anyone need more than that atm.

Well if anyone was reading the article it says that the PS3 is already capable of reading these disks so what's the big deal?

“The recent breakthrough by the team, working at the G.E. lab in Niskayuna, N.Y., north of Albany, was a 200-fold increase in the reflective power of their holograms, putting them at the bottom range of light reflections readable by current Blu-ray machines.”

So what does this mean? It means that Holographic Optical Media can be read by Blu-Ray devices but doesn’t have to be limited to Blu-Ray technology.

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E!!!!!!!

LOL @ the HATERZ!

Not exciting until there is evidence that the format has an acceptable seek time (faster than blu-ray at it's launch) and an acceptable data rate.

The HVD also has a transfer rate of 1 Gbit/s (125 MB/s).This from wikipedia.I know don't is seek rate yet.

Doesn't seem necessary to me. The only games that can claim they needed Blu-Ray for the PS3 are games that went to insane lengths to fill that space (like Kojima's hours and hours of uncompressed and unrepeating radio static for MGS4). Blu-Ray will be fine.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

3.9TB! WTF are you gonna fill it with?

X720 Ltd Edition: Bonus Disc includes entire Xbox 1 lineup.

Okay, it just moved a little bit... however, is that a theoritical possible transfer rate?

A planned model made before the standards were finalized was only going to have a transfer rate of 20 MB/s according to Wikipedia.

125MB/s would be twice the speed of the fastest blu-ray laser (56MB/s) and 13.8 times as fast as the blu-ray laser used in the PS3.  If 125 MB/s is going to be the base speed, a x2 model will most likely be available by a consoles release.

"However, holographic drives are projected to initially cost around US$15,000, and a single disc around US$120–180, although prices are expected to fall steadily"

Now let's just hope that the price does indeed plummet steadily.

Now if only we had a seek time.

The funny thing is if this tech is like the one Nintendo and Inphase Tech patented together called HDS (Holographic data storage) than the seek time would Be based on wikipedia "Files on the holographic drive can be accessed in less than 200 milliseconds " from wiki
