No, not really. Worse case scenario is that it's going to be a little worse than the typical flu.

It's not an end-of-days pandemic that kills everyone. There are 600+ cases in the USA, and 0 deaths of Americans. Any respectable country (ie, first world) will easily be able to contain and combat this flu. Because thats what it is: flu.

If this was a more easily spread SARS, we may have a problem. But all this is, is a different flu strain. Even under worst-case scenarios, where the flu is not contained for 2 years...We may have 300 million deaths. That's hardly a dent in the world population.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Actually most likely scenario is that its going to be far worse than typical flu as it will spread to a far greater percentage of the population and probably have a somewhat higher mortality rate.

Worst case scenario is that it will be much much worse than the typical flu as not only will it be a pandemic but it will also mutate into a more virulent form and have a much higher mortality rate.

Yeah, there is no real end of days thing here with the flu.  What happens when a new flu bug is introduced to humans, the result is the sick individual comes down with pnuemonia.  The severity of the phuemonia is what results in death, so typically the only people that die are ill, elderly or young.

And think, the next time you're standing in line, you can thank the swine flu for making it that much shorter.

I would not disagree however read this article

My guess is that you can expect to see a lot of panic over this issue in the near future. But the key is to remain calm -- this isn't the first time the public has been warned about swine flu. The last time was in 1976, right before I entered medical school and I remember it very clearly. It resulted in the massive swine flu vaccine campaign.

Do you happen to recall the result of this massive campaign?

Within a few months, claims totaling $1.3 billion had been filed by victims who had suffered paralysis from the vaccine. The vaccine was also blamed for 25 deaths.

However, several hundred people developed crippling Guillain-Barré Syndrome after they were injected with the swine flu vaccine. Even healthy 20-year-olds ended up as paraplegics.

And the swine flu pandemic itself? It never materialized.

More People Died From the Swine Flu Vaccine than Swine Flu!
