Forums - Gaming - If Microsoft Beats Nintendo What Happens to J gaming? Why Square is Smart.

i am in the minority i guess when i say that sony ps3 will sell significantly more consoles than the 360 this gen (if there is a lengthy timeframe before new consoles ie 3 years or more)but screw square enix if they dont want to make games for the ps3 i will spend my money somewhere else with a different company

MS won't beat Nintendo. Neither will Sony.

They're in a race for 2nd place...

"I don't have time to play video games anymore, but if I did, I would definitely choose the PlayStation 3 instead of the 360" - President Barack Obama

Is everyone forgetting that the Xbox 360 has been out a year longer then the PS3?

And if you compare both hardware launches the PS3 is actually 3 million ahead of the Xbox 360.

So once it's the year 2012 and if the Xbox 360 is still ahead of the PS3 (which I dought) then you can admit that the PS3 was "handled" by the X360.

And this doesn't make much sense because your assuming way to many things. Your assuming that Sony is going to end up like they are for this generation in the next generation. Nintendo went for being in last to number one. For all we know it could be turned around again and Sony will be back on top of the console market. And the only reason why the X360 is as cheap as it is, is because once again it's been out for a year longer then both the PS3 and Wii.

One of the main reasons the X360 keeps getting exclusive games is not because Japanese gaming companies want to exclusively makes games for just the X360 because they know it'll be the number one console for the next generation?, it's because Microsoft is paying them to exclusively make a game for there console.

So I'm not saying the next Microsoft console won't be the number one console for the next generation, because anything could happen, but it's just your examples didn't make much sense to me.

Another reason we're probably seeing Square games on 360 (and some of the other timed exclusive like Vesperia) is because it is easier to program games for 360.

Oh dear oh dear. This Gen is along way from over, and theres many sales left to come. Also, do you honestly think Sony will drop the Playstation brand that has sold around 300M Consoles worldwide??

I think Square and Capcom are ultimately being stupid, and not smart. This effort to specifically appeal to the Western hardcore gamer isn't going to be very productive for them in the long run. Nintendo has shown that you can energize all the markets, and Square Enix and Capcom are paying too much attention to the naysayers (internet fanboys/ "game journalists") in the West that are saying Japan is old hat, and are feeding into the myth that Western and Japanese tastes are irrevocably separate, and must be catered to separately

I feel the same way about Kojima, really.

The videogame industry is growing far quicker outside of Japan than it is inside so I can't imagine it being beneficial for them not to try to appeal to Western gamers.  Also it's pretty much a given that next generation it's likely that all three consoles will be HD.  So what exactly are you suggesting?  That Japanese third-parties make niche SD Japanese games that sell a few hundred thousand at best?  If they would have followed that course they would be sheep to the slaughter next generation when they would be competing against lean Western third-parties that have survived a survival of the fittest situation with games that have engines in their third or fourth generation.

MS Won't beat Nintendo, period. 360 is currently the cheapest console and is still being outsold by the Wii by a large margin.

I don't get how some of you tend to overlook the things that are NOT going well for MS.

Their move to $199 was a desperate and premature move. Before the price drop, they were already over a $100 cheaper than PS3 and were being outsold by it on a weekly basis(quite embarrassing). Now the 360 is HALF THE PRICE of PS3 and barely outsells it on a weekly basis(also embarrassing).

Why do you think MS's gaming division is back to posting losses??? Because they are losing money on the $199 model. No console should be losing money 3.5 years after launch. It seems that their strategy is to keep dropping the price as low as they have to just to claim that they're outselling PS3. When PS3 drops to $299, MS will have to either drop the price and incur more losses or be outsold by PS3.

And I'm sorry, but what Square is doing is idiotic to say the least. They're taking the moneyhats from MS and rushing JRPG's through development. Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant both got poor reviews and had poor sales. Star Ocean 4 had good reviews and decent sales. This is a huge step down from a company known for making AAA JRPG's that sell several million copies each.

And just read all the posts from Square fans about what they think about the company these days. Square is rapidly losing dignity with their fans and that will hurt them in the long run.

If games like Assassin's Creed 2, Call of Duty 4 pt. 2, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2, Gears 3, Halo 4, GTA V, Final Fantasy XIV were xbox exclusives, they'd be walking all over Nintendo.

Videogame industry growth outside of Japan is mainly due to Nintendo, so it won't be beneficial to any of those devs as the games you're talking about aren't on Nintendo consoles.

Also, it seems like the devs of Persona games and Disgaea games this gen (who still make SD games) are far less sheep to the slaughter than other devs that crashed and burned.
