Go for the Phenom II X4 955. You'll spare up to $100 between motherboard/processor while keeping a similar game performance, unless you want to go Crossfire/SLI, of course.

But if you aren't into gaming, grab a i7 920.

The i7 / ddr3 ram will provide quite a bit in the FPS category for that 100$ difference.

The Halo francise is the most overrated bland game to ever hit the console market. It provides a bad name to all FPS that even showed effort at creating an original entertaining plot.

I probably have more ps3 games than you :/

Get a Phenom 955. It'll last you three years easily.

Put your dollars into switching the GPU twice in that time period instead of wasting a lot on the CPU.

there fixed. the 955 is a bit pricier but its unlocked so you can OC it like a bitch!!! best CPU for under $300. Almost as good as the I7. But yeah save the money and get a good GPU. Much more important than the best CPU.

The i7 is the fastest processor out there right now, but it is expensive.  The AMD Phenom II and the core2 are a lot less money.   All of these processors are fast.

If your application if very memory intesive, not gaming, the i7 with its three DDR3 memory busses can give a 40% boost in performance.  In most games the i7 is not any faster.

That is good to know.. I'll need to upgrade soonish for rendering purposes.

Still not accurate information. i7 with it's DDR3 capabilities allows the bottle necks the Phenom and Core series produce to be completely bypassed showing massive improvements in videogames at higher resolutions.

umm ok im running DDR3 ram on my AMD phenom II 955. You just have to have the AM3 socket type on your motherboard. Phenom II FTW!!!

or you buy an insane CPU like the core i7 then just randomly upgrade the GPU every few years due to the fact you wont need a new processor for a long while.

as far as gaming goes the Phenom II 955 beats the Core I7 920. Not only does it have a faster clock speed but it can also over clock well. If hes going for a gaming PC and is budget constricted there is no reason to go the I7 especially when Phenom II can beat it in performance/dollar in gaming. Now if were talking multimedia applcations i will agree and say go the I7 route. Its up to him

Long Live SHIO!

I provided a link for you, not my fault you are to lazy to look at it. Go read some actual reviews of equal systems, the i7 is just better, its not a matter of debate.

I'd do that. It's the sensible route. Also, get that 999 i7. It's the most expensive, and thus, the best. I'm dead serious. Don't cheapo depot your CPU. It's the only important part of the computer you can't upgrade.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

If you're going to get an i7, get the 920 and clock it 3.3 Mhz with the stock cooler or 3.6 Mhz and higher with a decent aftermarket cooler.

With this you'll get fast clocks for games and applications that are clock sensitive and the benefits of the high bandwidth and thread features for everything else.

The Phenoms aren't bad for a budget but as more and more programs begin to take advantage of the i7's features, the Phenoms will trail further behind and you'll want to upgrade your CPU again earlier than with a i7 920.
