I'm predicting that as of December 31, 2009 PS3 will have sold 5+ million units in Japan 10+ million sold in America, and 15-16 million sold everywhere else I'm predicting the PS3 to hit 32 million units by December 2009. Xbox 360 I think may still be ahead, but only a small margin.
Predictions (12/31/09) X360- 36 million units PS3- 32 million units Wii- 57 million units |
For the PS3 to sell 5 million+ units by the end of the year in Japan, it would have to sell what it did last week (50+k) every week for the rest of the year. Now how likely is that?

I do agree with you that it's entirely unlikely, but I there is a possibility of the Wii and PS3 at least tying in units sold.
here's my reasoning:
for convenience, lets say the PS3 and Wii launched at the same time.
If the Wii's sales were to fall by the same margin that the PS3's were to grow, then they could be matched in the future.
Basically, If the wiil sold 5 the first year, 4 the next, 3 this year 2 next year and 1 the year after and the PS3 sold 1 the first year, 2 the next, 3 this year, 4 next year and 5 the year after the sales would be tied.
i.e Wii=5+4+3+2+1 = 1+2+3+4+5=PS3
Highly unlikely to happen though, and it flies in the face of all known sales numbers and trends in Japan but definately possible if the Wii starts selling like the PS3 did and the PS3 were to sell as well as the Wii has done.
