Anyone saying "up" really has no idea.

FFXIII is *incredibly* hard-core fan base. The same people tend to buy all the new FF titles, and tend to hang on anything FF related.

Sure the demo sold less than the game will - but anyone who bought a PS3 *for* the demo, would have bought a PS3 *for* the full game. Therefore, those hardware sales have been brought forward.

If you want to argue that the demo will result in more sales of the game, and therefore more hardware sold at launch - good luck. Its a hardcore title, and a demo will not change that. Its not like its a new franchise, that people need marketing to know about - everyone knows about it.

This is pretty much my thinking.

It only takes a quick look at the general demographic of the people saying otherwise (with one or two exceptions) to understand their motivations.

The jab at sony fans / fanboys wasn't necessary, starcraft.

in any case: whatever the result, it does go to show that FF XIII will sell boatloads in Japan. As for whether it will increase or decrease:

There are multiple ways to check this. One is that the absolutely huge fans of FF XIII now finally got convinced to check it out and bought a PS3 for it. Those will cause a downturn in the console sales when it actually hits. On the other hand: we do not know how many people are still just waiting for the game to come out before picking it up, hoping that GT 5 is also in the vicinity and that the price of the PS3 has dropped too. And I'm inclined to think that - judging on how often people rant here about the price of the PS3 - that this is a decent amount.

Surely, you don't think that EVERY FF XIII fan has the money to go bonkers every single time something is available? There are probably lots of people speculating for a price drop to occur sometime this year, maybe even hoping it comes before or at the time of the FF XIII game. Whatever the case, console sales (imho) will see a large surge when the title hits, albeit a smaller one without a price cut.

Besides, give us your thoughts about what kind of numbers the console will sell when FF XIII hits? Because you could still say "Oh man, imagine how high it could've been without that demo" when the game releases, no matter how high the console numbers are. Hedging :)

I actually raised it if a demo did that what will game do??

Again, the demo was not the only cause of the hardware sales spike... FF7 Special edition PS3 hardware came out.

I still believe that after the launch of the two Final Fantasies and GT 5 the PS3 will have at least a 5 to 1 lead over the 360 in Japan.

Because of the success of the demo?

With loads of threads already discussing the fact that the FFXIII demo may single-handedly have turned the tide of the console war this week, it stands to reason that most people in Japan who would have purchased the PS3 for FFXIII have now already done so.

Given the success of the demo, how many of you have revised down your estimations for the launch week?

Please give me your predictions for HW and SW sales in Japan only in launch week and lifetime (SW) for the PS3 and FFXIII respectively.

at least an inteligent post on the subject.

My estimate went down by 40k.... so not much. I consider that the PS3's main purchase hargument has been FFXIII for .... well since the start... so potential buyers probably already bought it... i's just too late in the gen.

my estimate is 80-120K HW and 1-1.2M SW, I don't see that game being as big as the other FFs in JP...

outside of JP there will be only a little HW boost, as people buying the console only for this game will be more inclined to spend $300 less...

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

I don't get it. How can anyone lower expectation because of impressive launch of the demo. Gamers who decided to buy PS3 exclusively for this demo are members of the smallest group of all FF fans in Japan. It hints how big the whole audience is.

We all know PS3 performance in Japan is lackluster so far to say the least so there is still a room for new users. FFXIII will move more hardwere than any FF so far. It is obvious.

They're still the same.

110-130K HW

1.6M+ SW

First Week.

4 ≈ One

PS3 will sell over 100k+ in Japan when FFXIII launches in Japan later on this year. PS3 is building sales momentum and it will continue to win Japan region over the Wii in 2009 and beyond.

I like my ps3 over 360 but I agree with Starcraft. It would be silly to ignore the special edition ffvii ps3 sales that could have boosted sales.

However, we must also understand that the ps3 is getting back to some sort of shape in japan now outselling the Wii consistantly. I don't think it will be ffxiii alone that brings hw sales, it will be a combination of things:

1. Possible price cut
2. Gt5
3. Ffxiii versus
4. More jrpgs from 360 being porter
5. Kojima San announcing a mgs5 or ZoE at E3
6. Other exclusive jrpgs being announced on ps3
7. Eye pet and other eye toy games being announced

Remember, Sony isn't just relying on 1 or 2 games to push sales this year, they are pushing sw to push hw this year.

To conclude; I agree that it isn't ffxiii alone that caused the spike in sales, but I also think there will be other factors pushing hw sales in japan.
