FFXIII is *incredibly* hard-core fan base. The same people tend to buy all the new FF titles, and tend to hang on anything FF related.
Sure the demo sold less than the game will - but anyone who bought a PS3 *for* the demo, would have bought a PS3 *for* the full game. Therefore, those hardware sales have been brought forward.
If you want to argue that the demo will result in more sales of the game, and therefore more hardware sold at launch - good luck. Its a hardcore title, and a demo will not change that. Its not like its a new franchise, that people need marketing to know about - everyone knows about it. |
This is pretty much my thinking.
It only takes a quick look at the general demographic of the people saying otherwise (with one or two exceptions) to understand their motivations.

The jab at sony fans / fanboys wasn't necessary, starcraft.
in any case: whatever the result, it does go to show that FF XIII will sell boatloads in Japan. As for whether it will increase or decrease:
There are multiple ways to check this. One is that the absolutely huge fans of FF XIII now finally got convinced to check it out and bought a PS3 for it. Those will cause a downturn in the console sales when it actually hits. On the other hand: we do not know how many people are still just waiting for the game to come out before picking it up, hoping that GT 5 is also in the vicinity and that the price of the PS3 has dropped too. And I'm inclined to think that - judging on how often people rant here about the price of the PS3 - that this is a decent amount.
Surely, you don't think that EVERY FF XIII fan has the money to go bonkers every single time something is available? There are probably lots of people speculating for a price drop to occur sometime this year, maybe even hoping it comes before or at the time of the FF XIII game. Whatever the case, console sales (imho) will see a large surge when the title hits, albeit a smaller one without a price cut.
Besides, give us your thoughts about what kind of numbers the console will sell when FF XIII hits? Because you could still say "Oh man, imagine how high it could've been without that demo" when the game releases, no matter how high the console numbers are. Hedging :)
