Forums - Nintendo - Next Nintendo System

2011, a case i've made before. It fits in with their strategy of upstreaming, of gradually building the blue ocean into something more complex (of raising blue ocean customers, as opposed to trying to fight into the red ocean)

They'll pursue a 3rd-pillar strategy with the Wii's successor for a time, so as not to cut the Wii's legs out from under it, but i see no reason for Nintendo to hold on to the Wii for an incredibly long time. Equally, i think the power of momentum in between generations should give Nintendo an edge, and that they will win the next generation unless Sony or Microsoft does something to change the rules of engagement, as it were.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

It is pretty certain that the next Nintendo system will be HD, since there's been a large push to convert to digital cable in the US and beyond. What will be interesting to see what Nintendo does to enhance their controls to put them above the MS and Sony motion controls (which there will be)

Up, only time will tell.

Honestly by 2013 something even better then 1080p will be out. If the Wii sticks with the 720p, this could hurt them. Also keep in mind that more and more people are buying HD tvs.

That is the silliest thing I have heard since about 5 minutes ago when I was reading some thread predicting PS3 will surpass X360 by this December.

There are things with better than 1080p out now!, called PCs.... the thing with gaming consoles is that they are tied to televisions..... do you really think in 4 years people will be willing to buy a new TV after they just bought a 1080 TV only a few years previously.

In 4 years the "standard" definition will be still only just changing over from the current 480 to 1080 or whatever... hel at the moment there are still hardly any HD television channels available here in the UK (BBC HD, Sky HD, and some of the Sky film channels)

In fact it is going to be another 2 years before everyone in the UK is finally forced to switch to digital TV over analogue, never mind when HD become standard.

also, the hd adoption rate is being cannibalized due to the recession. nobody wants to spend much money right now. even if the tv they have right now explodes into flames, they would still rather get the cheapest 480i definition averaged sized tv they can.

come try out the computer game i've been working on for my high school senior project, titled sling ball. http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=76669&page=1

you can view a few screenshots from the game in my photo album here; http://www.vgchartz.com/photos/album.php?album=2312

yes, this is vonboy's alt account. i can't log into my original account, and i'm not sure if i will ever be able to.

So you guys are saying that a console capable of 480p in 2013 is going to sell?

If you didn't notice, most of us were saying it will be in HD... as in 1080p.... there will be no reason for it not to by then because it's likely well over 50% of people buying consoles will have a 1080p TV.

The previous post of mine was in reference to you saying there "might be something better than 1080p" by 2013... which is a silly thing to say, because:
First of all higher resolutions than 1080p are already possible (and have been on PCs for a long time)

Second of all the number of people willing to buy new TVs again in 2013 when 1080p TVs have not been mainstream for more than 6-7 years would be miniscule.... which is why no manufacturer will be making TVs with higher than 1080p for a good 10 years at least, if not a good deal longer (except of course in small dedicated tech circles, ie most TV manufacturers have already made superHD tvs, but you can't exactly go into Dixons and buy one now)

If they came out with a regular next gen system with a regular controller then I'd buy it. Just make an up to date N64!

BTW guys im not a Wii hater, b/c I own one.

@OP
Nintendo opted to say out of the 720+/ip due to costs to the consumer and costs to the developer. It's not a linear cost upgrade to produce HD games. Both sides suffer from the extra costs. Increased hardware, increased increased software. Increased development costs and increased development.

As time goes by these costs decrease(don't forget the GC was 480p while the other 2 were not). Memory becomes cheaper, middle ware get's developed to reduce development time. As leet gamer said it is getting cheaper.

Nintendo will maintain current mass user graphics. So once the HD TV(not counting the early adopters like hardcore gamers) Nintendo will keep up.

The biggest hurdle Nintendo faces with the next gen isn't graphics. It's the CPU. The Gecko/Broadway is a PPC. As far as I know the PPC is not currently being tuned for multicore. Next gen this will be important for developers. It's an easy pass this gen since most PC don't rely on it, but in a few more years even PC games are going to start required multi core cpu. Once the 4+ cores start becoming common anyway.
