Forums - Sales - Mini Console Wars - Why Does Sony Lose Again?

Which handheld console kicks most butt? The PSP 3000 or the DSi? This is not a question that we hear all that often, these awesome little guys just do not seem to inspire the same, almost demented, passion as their big brothers. Now, the fact that the PSP 3000 (at the risk of getting flamed by tech heads) has more raw power does not seem to be in dispute. I say this with some trepidation as every time I make a statement like this, no matter how well I have researched it somebody pops their head up and tells me all the reasons I am wrong. (The PS3 has more grunt, get over it. How it is used is another matter entirely.)

Anyway, back on target here. The PSP 3000 seems to have more in the way of power and it is easily the best in terms of graphics. Something to remember though is that this has always been the case. The PSP has been, not too arguably, the better machine in these ways since its inception and perhaps just better full stop. Some people have issues with its one analogue stick but as well as the things I have already mentioned it has a bigger screen and the mutimedia side of things fairly sown up.  So, that is it then the PSP wins the handheld war? Far from it actually.

The DS has consistently kicked the butt of the PSP across the board for years in terms of sales. How can this be?

These mini console war facts bring me to a question I have been mulling over for a while now. Where is it going wrong for Sony if it is not with the hardware? Which, shoot me, I truly don’t believe it is

I am beginning to feel a little sorry for the guys at Sony who develop the actual equipment. They get their heads down and come up with some of the best gaming hardware ever seen and then watch it get its butt kicked in sales all over the shop. Now, before someone tells me that sales are not everything can I just say two things. Firstly, I agree with you in principle. Just because something is the most popular does not mean it is better. On the other hand I am  sure Sony don’t see it that way and also sales are a fairly decent indicator that something is giving people what they want. In that way sales do indicate ‘better’, better at satisfying more gamers needs.

I find it astonishing that Sony can consistently produce the goods in terms of hardware but cannot translate that into sales. What is going wrong up there? Some people are going to tell me it is all about games, and I guess there is some evidence for this if we look at the big consoles. Now that PS3 has started to release some decent exclusives sales do seem to have picked up (though arguably with the magnitude of the sales the Xbox 360 has been enjoying it may be a case of a saturated market.) but then they are not even enjoying the sales they should with some of the games they release. Look at LittleBigPlanet, it was an awesome game, fun, original, longest life span in history and the yet the sales would have been enough to make a grown Sony executive cry.

For me the answer to what is going wrong at Sony is fairly simple, forget the console wars, they are losing the PR war. That is the most important war of all. How do they fix it? Don’t ask me, I identitfying the problem was simple, fixing it is a whole different ball game.

I do know one thing though, there will be a fair few Sony PR executives siting on mega bucks who should know the answer to this problem and clearly don’t. Maybe it is time Sony had a good long look in their direction.

It's hard for some to understand that there are other factors in purchases than technical specifications but maybe with time they'll come to understand.

What's with all the spam links in the body of the text?

Super World Cup Fighter II: Championship 2010 Edition

Not very interesting. Mostly just the author saying, "I don't get it," over and over again. He only looks at what Sony has done without bothering to look at what Nintendo has done. It's not like the PSP is a failure (except perhaps at selling software outside Japan), it just isn't as much of a success as the DS.

And what's with all the dubious links in those paragraphs?

Search deep within yourself and you will find you already know the answer.

For whatever reason, the psp is my favorite system this generation. Personally, I thought the DS and psp's numbers would be switched. On paper, the psp has the superior graphics, photos, videos, memory cards, radio, internet connection, etc etc. I suppose there are just no games out there that really appeal to the public.

With Nintendo you know you'll be getting pokemon and mario games. Those alone are instant sellers. The psp--well crisis core and god of war are decent sellers. Ah well.
