Which handheld console kicks most butt? The PSP 3000 or the DSi? This is not a question that we hear all that often, these awesome little guys just do not seem to inspire the same, almost demented, passion as their big brothers. Now, the fact that the PSP 3000 (at the risk of getting flamed by tech heads) has more raw power does not seem to be in dispute. I say this with some trepidation as every time I make a statement like this, no matter how well I have researched it somebody pops their head up and tells me all the reasons I am wrong. (The PS3 has more grunt, get over it. How it is used is another matter entirely.)
The DS has consistently kicked the butt of the PSP across the board for years in terms of sales. How can this be?
I am beginning to feel a little sorry for the guys at Sony who develop the actual equipment. They get their heads down and come up with some of the best gaming hardware ever seen and then watch it get its butt kicked in sales all over the shop. Now, before someone tells me that sales are not everything can I just say two things. Firstly, I agree with you in principle. Just because something is the most popular does not mean it is better. On the other hand I am sure Sony don’t see it that way and also sales are a fairly decent indicator that something is giving people what they want. In that way sales do indicate ‘better’, better at satisfying more gamers needs.
I find it astonishing that Sony can consistently produce the goods in terms of hardware but cannot translate that into sales. What is going wrong up there? Some people are going to tell me it is all about games, and I guess there is some evidence for this if we look at the big consoles. Now that PS3 has started to release some decent exclusives sales do seem to have picked up (though arguably with the magnitude of the sales the Xbox 360 has been enjoying it may be a case of a saturated market.) but then they are not even enjoying the sales they should with some of the games they release. Look at LittleBigPlanet, it was an awesome game, fun, original, longest life span in history and the yet the sales would have been enough to make a grown Sony executive cry.
For me the answer to what is going wrong at Sony is fairly simple, forget the console wars, they are losing the PR war. That is the most important war of all. How do they fix it? Don’t ask me, I identitfying the problem was simple, fixing it is a whole different ball game.
