Forums - General - Bill Nye (science guy) booed for saying moon reflects light from the sun

Trying to read anything scientific into the Book of Genesis is an exercise in futility. It was written almost 3000 years ago by people who thought plants could exist before the sun.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

If you're referring to Genesis 1, that was only for (if that) one day ;)  And even then, there was light (from somewhere).

In any event, the idea is that it's God-inspired, so the date wouldn't matter.

Finally, the verse mentioned in the story isn't saying the moon generates it's own light.

When I read this thread title, I came in here a bit worried thinking that my knowledge was somehow out of date and we realized that the moon doesn't technically "reflect light" from the sun. I was thinking Bill got booed for not having up-to-date knowledge about the subject.

Glad to hear that I'm still keeping up with the times. :P

Wow me too, haha. Half way through the article, I then Atheists were mad at him for referencing the bible, lol.

I'm sometimes ashamed at the ignorance of my fellow man (or woman).

I wonder what these people think of new moons, solar/lunar eclipses (their lives must be hell with all these supernatural God miracles happening all the time).

That woman and her three children were probably Catholic. They take everything too damn literally!

Uh, guys.

Light - any device serving as a source of illumination.

You're telling me the moon doesn't serve as a source of illumination at night?

I like this post. Seriously those guys must lead very stressful lives, if every second action is attributed to an unfathomable and unpredictable God, rather than as many people think, predictable science.

Yep. It isn't a source as such, it reflects illumination.

That's definitely debatable.  Without the moon, it is impossible for that light to reach the dark side of the earth.  It is a source in the sense that light is rebounding (coming directly from the moon to the earth) off of it.  We use light like that all the way (i.e. his shining forehead lit up the room).  It's not possible to definitely prove that Moses had the correct idea of how light interacted with the Moon, but he's not clearly wrong like Bill Nye and some people in this thread want to make him seem.

Edit: And, going by your definition, grocery stores aren't sources of food because the food really comes from the farm.  The issue is how restrictive your defintion of source is.

The article has been updated to say that the story isn't true. Sorry guys, was funny while it lasted.
