I see the 360 slashing price as low as 150 this year.

If sony drops the price of the ps3 to 299, I think 360 will still outsell ps3 at a 150 entry point.

And if sony drops to 299 this year, I don't expect them to drop the price next year, and since 360 will still be outselling the ps3, I dont expect microsoft to slash the price of the 360 next year either.

A 299 ps3 cannot touch a 149 dollar xbox 360, it just can't.

History disagrees. In Q4 2007 when the PS3 dropped its price to $399.99, they closed the gap between them and the 360 ($279.99) down to $120 ($140 later in Europe/Japan). From that time until the 360 had a firesale for the 20GB Pro model and dropped it's price to $299.99 followed up with a huge price cut for all models making the cheapest one $199.99, the 360 didn't manage to outsell the PS3 in weekly, worldwide sales even once. The 360 was incapable of outselling the PS3 at a difference of under $140.

Not only would a $299.99 PS3 "touch" a  $149.99 360, it would consistently outsell it between Q1 and Q3. The only questionable period would be Q4, where consumers are significantly more price-concious. However, if the PS3 were to issue a $100 price cut IN Q4, then the pent up demand as well as the spontanious purchases would likely put the two on even grounds in overall sales at a $150 difference. However, the main difference between the two that could push Sony ahead of Microsoft is the games. Sony's Q4 lineup of games is pretty much solid. Final Fantasy XIII in Japan will close much of any gap between the two consoles in the west and Gran Turismo 5 is heavily rumored for a December release which would ensure PS3's dominance in Europe. After those two megatons, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, M.A.G., Heavy Rain, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Katamari Forever, and EyePet rounds out a pretty spectacular lineup. On the otherside, Microsoft doesn't have a single exclusive game announced for Q4 this year. Halo 3: ODST is September, Mass Effect 2 is 2010, Alan Wake is TBA, and Ninety-Nine Nights II is TBA 2009, but only currently in Japan. Everyone seems to be hoping out of necessity that Microsoft will announced a slew of huge games all coming this year at E3, but not much supports this train of thought. Forza Motorsport 3 is an obvious game to be announced at E3, but every Forza Motorsport has released in May so far with a two year difference between them. In the same sense as God of War III, I would not be one bit surprised if Forza 3 is a 2010 title. We'll almost definitely be getting at least one new game announcment from Rare, but the developer's history suggests that they won't have more than one game released this year, if even that. Furthermore, Rare games never seem to sell spectacularly. Lionhead Studios will probably announce something, but I don't think anyone is dilusional enough to think it will actually come this year. I expect the typical standby's for Microsoft this Q4 such as Scene It? 3, Naruto 3, and Dance Dance Revolution 4, but anyone expecting too much more than the above is setting themselves up for massive disappointment.

You cannot compare a 280 dollar xbox 360 to a 150 xbox 360, period.

Like I said before, A 299 ps3 cannot touch a 149 dollar xbox 360, it just can't.

I don't know if you've checked the weekly worldwide sales charts recently, but we can already compare a 400 dollar PS3 to a 200 dollar 360. You can bet your ass we can compare a 150 dollar 360 to a 300 dollar PS3.

.................and 360 is still outselling the ps3 monthly worldwide, ps3 has not outsold 360 for not one month worldwide this year, so you're point is what again?

if they both cut the price at same time it would just be more of the same

When the two consoles are selling roughly 900k a month and one sells less than 50k more than the other, that's far from incomparable. I don't see how you can spin Microsoft's 5% lead last month despite having a price difference of at least $200 in every region as making the two consoles incomparable in sales.

Sesitive much? Careful man, might pop a blood vessel.

Learn how to read my post right, before you go in defensive mode so easily.

I said, If trophies wouldn't have been implimented, some people wouldn't hold off on playing games, not knowing if a trophy patch will be released later on.

Achievements are in every 360 game and is a complete system. Wii games not having Achievements is a complete system. I don't care if every game after 2009 gets trophies, that's not my point.

Oh I assure you,  I'm not in defensive mode.  It was just an utterly retarded post.  Sorry.

A. ) This premise that trophies are driving purchases and sales is absolutely and utterly retarded.

B.)  Either Achievements/Trophies matter ... or they don't.   Your argument is totally illogical.  Wii games not having trophies makes it a complete system.  Xbox 360 games having trophies makes it a complete system.  Lol.  That's an argument that a 12 year old would try to make.  I expect better.

@rpruett. I really think you should watch your tone. Pbroy has a very good point that you can't seem to understand.

I for one bought valkyria chronicles and still haven't played it yet. It's still sealed in a box because I don't want to play it if trophies come out for it. They've never said they aren't coming out, but until they give me some kind of closure on the subject I won't play it. I bought it because I thought the update would have it. If there was no update I wouldn't have bought it yet.

It's not that I don't want to play it. It's just that there are soo many great games out right now that I want to devote my attention to and I hate replaying games. Unfortunately games with trophies like killzone and gundam simply take priority right now.

I am not a bad gamer for doing this. I am a smart gamer who works and goes to school for about 80 hours a week.

I am not trying to compare anything, and I am not trying to spin anything, plus the NPD numbers for the month of March came in and showed that VG Chartz was way off with the American numbers and the difference was like 35% higher sales for xbox 360, who to tell the European/Others numbers aren't off as well, too bad we don't have a well publisized company to track sales for Europe/Others like NPD, then we could really know if the sales figures on VG charts are accurate, the bottom line is xbox 360 is still outselling the ps3 worldwide monthly period.

let's look at a metaphorical situation with similar differences.

multiply the prices by 100

40,000 vs 20,000

say those prices are for a truck. They are pretty similar, and the cheaper one has had some issues in the past with the battery dying early. On top of that, the expensive one comes from a long line of award winning automobiles that your family or friends own in one way or another, and you like what it has to offer.

Say you make 50,000 a year and you have no other expenses. Which one do you buy? Do you save 30k for the year or only 10k?

Say the price drops on the 40k one, and goes down to 30k or even 35k. Is that 5 or 10k enough to get you through the rest of the year?

lets say the same with a soft drink: 2$ vs 4$

@4$, the drink is almost as expensive as a meal. At 3$, not so much, but 2$ is better, and just about the average price. 2.50$ or more is kind of expenisve for a soft drink don't you think? Some people will splurge, some people won't.

The bottom line: 400$ is about what the average person makes in about 9-12 days. 300$ is about what the average person makes in 5-6 days, including days not working. At 200$, you could buy something  with one paycheck. You don't even need to save! You can buy the console and possible a game with one check and then scrub until next payday. @400$ you need to scrub for an entire week and halfway into another week, it really takes some planning. If you don't scrub, it could even take longer. However, nothing beats a price that you can afford in one paycheck.

You really can't argue to much with that bottom line... that's simple economic truth.  It's especially true with people who buy the Arcade version... they just want to play madden or fifa or whatever is their game of choice... maybe download some roster updates.

Microsoft should hold off imo unless they want to DRASTICALLY reduce the lifespan of the 360.

Microsoft dropping the price to 150 this year will not drastically reduce the lifespan of the system, they can keep the 360 at that price for another 2 years, that would lead us into holiday 2011 when the next xbox should be launching.

That would leave the pro at 250 dollars, Microsoft don't have to drop the price as the 360 would be cheap enough, but a 199 dollar pro and a 129 dollar arcade is also a possibility for holiday 2010.

Plus in the future they could exploit the business model Apple employs so well for the iPod. Reduce the price for the Arcade model to say $150, then next year you phase out the Arcade model because the price of a HDD might be neglible by that point and bump all the more expensive tiers down one notch.  Effectively giving a price drop by adding value without actually reducing the price.
