| MikeB said: @ starcraft Tomb Raider Underworld developer (the game is BTW 6.8 GB): "asset-wise 360 was around first, so we made stuff keeping the 360 in mind first." So the PS3 suffers here due to the 360. "Secondly, the matters of multithreading policies, the whole job queue architecture, encapsulation of jobs and their corresponding data packets, etc. that work on the PS3 are indeed more than applicable of the 360/PC. And as I've mentioned before, they work better than anything and everything that Microsoft recommends (so far without exception for us)." So the 360 benefits here due to the PS3. |
That second quote is merely saying that the concepts for developing an application with multiple cores in mind, as necessary on the PS3, are also applicable to the 360 and PC. And in this case, worked better than what MS told them to do. The one thing that can be gathered from this is that all developers should start embracing multiple cores and embracing the concepts to best take advantage of them.
not a big deal - use multiple disks - nuff said
@mikeb - just face the fact that no matter how much you hate the xbox 360 , it is still kicking the ps3s ass in terms of profitabilty and sales.
I will just point something out here as well.
People like MikeB talk about how DVD9 is this massive obstacle and limitation. But games like Army of Two and Bioshock (I mean come on, Rapture was HUGE and it was a VERY impressive game graphically) dont even come close to filling up the available DVD space.
Hell, Burnout Paradise is HALF the possible size for a single DVD, and Assassin's Creed (another HUGE world) doesn't fill it either.
Edit: And OMG Fallout 3 doesn't even hit 6GB. People need to stop acting like 45GB on a Blu-Ray is ever going to be CLOSE to necessary.
Edit 2: And for the people suggesting weather effects were kept out of PGR4 because of disk space....: 6GB.
starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS
MikeB is correct; the limit is roughly 6.8GB. I haven't read the whole thread, but in case no one has mentioned it: a lot of that unusable space is there for anti-piracy reasons.
@starcraft: Yes, very few games are held back by the size limit. Games with lots of pre-rendered cutscenes won't fit, but those just use multiple DVDs. The one game that really does have issues is id Software's upcoming Rage, but with a combination of compression techniques and the use of two DVDs they're working around the problem.
The worse the ps3 sales, the more MikeB posts.
I gotta link you guys the walloftext he wrote on neogaf about the technical excellence of the ps3 when it was clocking under 25k/week in the USA. Truly hilarous stuff.
Ah, desesperation. It sucks however that while MikeB is the one feeling it, but we end up receiving some collateral damage.

Likely a typo:
Here they say 6.5 GB:

Here they say 6.8 GB
Only one can be right, I expect one of these two, as a bigger install isn't needed.

It's a big deal to developers. They don't take it lighthearted to spread their games onto multiple discs, thus will usually resort to storage related sacrifices instead.
I never said I hate the 360, I do dislike the technical misinformation spread by 360 fanboys.
Furthermore I don't own Sony stock, I mainly care about developers getting the most out of the PS3 and the technical aspects. I like the PS3 games better and my most anticipated games are all on the PS3 (especially God of War 3 and Uncharted 2!).
