Forums - Sales - Sony: Piracy Has Taken 'Big Chunk Of Game Sales' From PSP!

It’s too late for Sony to do anything about piracy with the PSP, as all phats and all slims pre firmware 4.xx) are easily hackable. Also a HEN (Homebrew ENabler) should be out very soon for the 3000.

This is just going to force Sony into a better business model for the PSP2 with downloadable content, no UMD, possibly an apps store similar to the iPhone and profitable hardware from the start.

While most people use CFW to pirate games there are legitimate reasons to hack your PSP. Games running off your memory stick load faster and uses less battery. Homebrew has produced a pdf reader, a better mp3, a youtube player and many other apps to better the PSP. Emulation is also possible for the NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1 and other systems. Basically PSP is a great product. It’s too bad you have to hack it to get the most functionality out of it.

As for piracy as stated before the losses are probably exaggerated but they are still losses but who know how many people bought a PSP for piracy?

I disagree.... I think piracy has created a huge chunk of PSPs sold.

Without piracy... these PSPs just wouldn't of sold.

It's like the Ipod.  Is piracy hurting Itunes sales....?  Or is it pushing more Ipods.

Studies seem to show it's the latter.

So sony should thank them? It may help them in the hardware side but in the software side? Sofware is important to you know. What's the use of PSP if there is no games coming out from it.

Is Piracy good for the industry? NO! You can say want you want. Yes it sells hardware. But does it sell software? Software is important to guys. Game developers are not working for free. They also have families to feed. Please stop with excuses that games are expensive. Do you think making a game is cheap?

That's why I hate people defending it. Support piracy and expect less games.

It said "Big chunk of Game Sales"

Sure it sold more PsPs. The extra PsPs sold do not equal Game sales though.

i've got hacked psp and play few downloaded games but still i have about 10-12 retail titles. most of downloaded games i wanted to try cause there wasn't any demo - and most of them i just deleteg after 30 minutes cause they sucked. it's easy to say that piracy is bad but with today reviews most of those "best game evah" titles are just mediocre poop. i'm still buying psp games that i like the most, but many of those "best psp games" are shit(wipeout, lumines), boring(patapon) or simply broken - not to mention most of them are too short. i bought new wipeout and lumines and both of them were in my handheld once maybe for 15 minutes. at the same time i've had best time with games like Ridge Racer 2, Kameleon, Power Stone Collection, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Innocent Life, Tales of the World, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes 2, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force series, dj max series and Valhalla Knights 2 then with God of War or Resistance(and all of them i've bought).

games being too expensive? that's true especially if developer want 40-50$ for game with no replay value that you will finish in less than 8 hours it's really hard to actually buy it when you know that you will finish it before dinner. i would probably buy more games if i could get some bonuses like in japan(that's why i imported Persona 4) and not just gamedisc and some 1 page instruction.

well still most of pirated psp titles are japanese Visual Novels and other japan-only titles that will never be released in english. beside psp i've got hacked ps2 so i can play games from other regions(since i have few retail games from japan and usa(same goes to wii). still i only download games for psp(since i'm using psp mainly to watch anime, read mangas and play old retro titles from old consoles and handhelds).

What I am wondering right now is why people who would stoop to video game piracy are doing on a game sales website?

What is the point?

Why would you even care how much a game is selling?

It makes no sense to me whatsoever!

The amount of copies of a particular movie or game that are pirated are related to how many it will sell. If a game is really popular, more people will buy it and more people will pirate it. The only game that had a disproportionate amount of pirated copies was Spore, because everybody was pirating it to protest the DRM. I highly doubt PSP games are being pirated any more than DS games, and if anything, they're being pirated far less because you actually have to mod/hack firmware/whatever. Downloading DS games is as easy as downloading .mp3s. There are still a great many people who will never download DS games or .mp3s.

I don't think piracy really hurts Sony or Nintendo though as much as they say though. I think it gets them to sell more hardware, DOESN'T hurt game sales (I think if forced to choose between paying or not playing, they'd choose to not play), and actually raises awareness about their games. There are pirates with tons of games, and their friends come over to play stuff. Their friends go "Wow this is cool can I borrow it?" and then "Oh, it won't play on my system at home unless I mod it?" "Naw, I don't want to mod it, that sounds risky. I'll just buy it."

I'm not advocating piracy, but I think video games cost too much, and if they can get the prices to a point that more people are comfortable paying, then the increase in sales will more than make up for it. Some people will always be pirates, and some people will never be pirates. And there are some who will only pirate if something costs waaaaay too much or is riddled with DRM.

Sadly I think DS is worst. Alot of people laugh at me for even buying DS games anymore.

Sad world indeed when people can't fork out for a game that deserves it.
