Forums - Gaming - EA's IP graveyard

The "Nintendo hath lost me" thread inspired me to go look for some IPs, especially from the so-hated EA, that are long dead and that we haven't seen anything for years now. Some of them ran for years until a game flopped or were considered unnecessary, and others appeared in recent compilations or "remakes".

I'll start with the Strike series, with four games made for various consoles until the last game 10 years ago, Nuclear Strike, on the N64 (after PSone and PC releases). Before the N64 version though, there was some kind of spin-off, Future Cop: L.A.P.D, which according to Wikipedia flopped and then nothing more came of it, except one GBA port of the first game and packed with EA Replay for the PSP in 2006.

Desert Strike came out in 1992 for the Amiga, Genesis, Master System and SNES. Then there was a PC version in 1994 and portable releases on the Lynx, Game Gear, Game Boy and finally, GBA and PSP.

For those who never played it (unlikely I guess), you control a helicopter (later games had on-foot missions and tanks, etc) and must complete a variety of objectives, from rescuing hostages to simply destroy targets. There's also a limited amount of fuel which must be "captured", and missiles too.

After Desert Strike there was Jungle Strike and Urban Strike on the 16-bit platforms, then Soviet Strike on the PSone and the Saturn and Jungle Strike on the PSone, PC and N64.

Last spotted: Desert Strike on the EA Replay collection

Syndicate was released in 1993 on the Amiga and PCs, and was ported to a shitload of platforms. The game had one expansion on computer platforms and a sequel on the Playstation and PCs. Syndicate was a strategy game and the player managed cyborg squads, killing rival cyborgs and completing other objectives, while researching new weapons and upgrades, earning money from conquered zones. The game is also playable on the EA Replay compilation.

Last spotted: apparently there's a sequel under works by Starbreeze Games, without apparently any deadline.

We can go on with Wing Commander (last spotted as an Xbox Live "quickie"), Theme games, Populous (recently rereleased on the DS), Road Rash... etc

what would YOU like to see EA revisiting in a way that "preserves" the franchise?

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

Them games were awesome.

Theme Park.

Ea owns this IP (and Bullfrog as a whole I think) but aside from the DS remake in 2005, we haven't seen anything of a new Theme Park since Theme Park Inc. on PC or Theme Park World on PS1. It is such an amazing game series, this is a total travesty. I want a new Theme Park!

Edit: ^ Funny you should mention Bullfrog too... it seems EA killed them and all their IPs by buying them

My Blog, Please Have A Read:

@Wiped: Don't blame EA, blame Molyneux (and Will Wright, while we're at it).

Molyneux allowed EA to let his Bullfrog's IPs die, Wright allowed EA to milk Maxis' IPs to death. Well, at least I think it's better to milk the Sims than Dungeon Keeper.

Sid Meier, on the other hand, knew how it has to be done: If you leave your company (MicroProse in his case), make sure to take your very own IPs with you.

Bullfrog is legendary.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

I played Desert Strike on Gameboy. It was great.

But to this day, Future Cop LAPD is one of the best games I have ever played. Played it on PS1 and it had some of the best multiplayer and co-op in existence at the time.
