DmeisterJ did a thread to help, but I'm not on my PC to link it. V_V
But essentially, it's a mission based dungeon crawler with RPG elements. It's winning merit is the animations and the engrossment of it's enviornments.
In monster hunter, if you want to make good potions to heal yourself, you have to find the herbs and honey and all the other materials yourself - the point of the game is kind of passive.
In the first Monster Hunter, the points were to become the best Monster Hunter and a rivalry and revenge as well, NPC's reactions change depending on what you've completed. However there is no set in stone story, other than your essentially a bounty hunter.
The game is what you make of it, there are tuns of things to do, like cooking, mining, fishing and so on, online is where most of the game reveals itself as well.
An example being that this video couldn't show that Monster Hunter has Friendly Fire on at all times, so that's why people don't like great sword users.
(Great swords swing wide and sends team mates flying, but those swords can take down monsters quickly, can gaurd, and you can dodge while using it. The only other weapon nearly as powerful is the Maul, but it's blunt so it can't cut tails and you can't gaurd while using it, meaning you spend most of the time dodging or Head locking.)
I'm Unamerica and you can too.
