I wish this economy was around when Dreamcast was fighing the PS2 in 2000...

$149 DC with much bigger and better library of games and other perks not found anywhere else like Online gaming
vs
$299 DVD player with promises of MGS2 and FF10 in the future

haha.. true that.. but i doubt sega out of all companies could "beat the economy"..

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

Sega around that time was too busy beating up itself to bother about beating the economy.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

Of course it is. Not as much as before, but it's still substantial.

QFT.

How much loss Sony had due to the PS3? The losses of the gaming division are well known but the PS3 loss (assuming it was the only factor driving the loss) were much higher, after all, the loss of the division included the profits of PS2 and PSP.

How much did the gaming division lost since the PS3 launch? If the PS3 breaks even now, it's good for Sony but before celebrating, they need to earn back all the loss they had and only then the PS3 will gerenate actual profit for Sony.

Yes, they probably are turning a small profit, but a price cut isn't necessarily the right way to go right now. They should continue what they've already been doing: releasing awesome 1st party games that will not only give Sony a profit by selling the games but will also lure some other people into buying the PS3.

Enjoy

Here is what Sony said to investors:

Q: My second question is related to Playstation number 3, the profitability is increasing, and when are you going to be seeing profit in the field of hardware?

A: If we base our projections on the present exchange rate to continue and if introduction of the 45 nm chips is fulfilled (it is being used in manufacturing already), but in view of that by latter half of next year, sometime there, I believe that we can see the improved margin and start to see profit.

Q: Point of confirmation, when you say later next year, is it later the second half of the calendar year 2009, or the fiscal year 2009?

A: Fiscal year 2009, that's March 2010.

Oh woah. It's amazing they've survived - credit goes to the long life of the ps2.

Anyways taking into account the currency value shift and increased revenue from a bigger userbase, a 2009 pricecut will happen. Now the question is: E3 or Fall season?

No, no, no. The question was specifically about hardware, and the result is clear. On top of the hardware costs, there are a LOT of other costs that the PS division (forgot what it is called now, networked entertainment and devices or something) has to cover. Companies need a healthy sales margin to cover those costs. Of course, the margin varies for each company, but to give you an idea one manufacturing company that I know well has a sales margin around 50%, meaning that if a product costs 100€ to produce, they will sell it for 200€. That will give them a healthy EBIT margin, but nothing extraordinary.

So, my point is: if Sony at some point starts to profit from the hardware, that DOES NOT mean a price cut is imminent.

They should drop the price in Japan after FFXIII releases

By the statement in the OP, i'm thinking that they're losing money on HW but making it back up in SW.

Just a small point: 50% sales margin on an item with a 100€ manufacturing cost is 50€.
