Nintendo did say they had a major announcement about Online coming in late September.
What is in late September? TGS.
While they won't have a booth on the show floor, they do have a media conference planned.
I have my own theory that IGN already knows the Wii headset is coming and they wrote this speculation/request article so they'll look good when Nintendo announces it later this month.

Makes sense. The remote was dissected and an audio translator found inside it, Nintendo's secret was discovered. So now they are going to reveal its purpose. My guess is that there will be a headset that plugs into the remote, for online chat (thus not needing another bluetooth channel).
edit: Hang on, that isn't going to be the September surprise. The context of the discussion made it clear to me that the surprise was a new channel of some sort. So nevermind.
A headset adapter in between the Wiimote and nunchuck could work...right?

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release. (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
I actually read that article earlier and didn't know you could vote but I will hope on over and vote. I def think there should be one because voiceless internet games aren't that fun to me anymore because I've been doing it for so long now it kinda sucks without it.
@Ben that would be flipping sweet if that happened, I really see no reason that it's not possible.
I think it could work ben, but it would drain the batteries faster. I prefer a standalone headset. I mean, I already have one for my cellphone :)
Voted yes!

If power can be transmitted from the Wii-motes batteries to the pass through adapter, yes. I'm unsure if they can transfer power that way or not though. So far all attachments have had no need to use the batteries for power and I've not read anywhere that it's capable of it either.

I would like a standalone as well...but I dunno...Nintendo's all about multiplayer games...4 player games...you wouldn't be able to have 4 controllers and 4 headsets active...unless they used USB perhaps?
But I guess when I think about it, that situation wouldn't occur too much...online play is usually for loners...
Also, the Wii Board probably can't support 4 WiiBoards and 4 Wiimotes at the same time...

Remember how Matt criticized Nintendo for not hyping Metroid enough? They had a channel hyping Metroid the next Monday.
If Nintendo announces the Wii headset on Monday, Matt's going to think he has mind control powers or something.

I believe the Wii's limit is four wireless devices total. So unless the headset hooks up to the Wiimote to transfer the information to the Wii, Bluetooth headsets would reduce the number of people who can play with the system.
In an article earlier this year, a company noted that the Wiimote includes a special 'audio translator' chip to compress analogue data into digital form:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/01/unused-audio-translator-revealed-in-wiimote/
So it's quite possible that a headset will eventually come out and Nintendo has planned for it all along. (Heck even the DS has one now!) Nintendo is just a little late in getting everything setup for it and are probably trying to figure out how to protect the children from the pedophiles... :P
Numbers are like people. Torture them enough and you can get them to say anything you want.
