Forums - Sony - Why does Sony refuse to advertise properly?

They lost their mojo when it comes to cool ads...

I think they have enough advertising, it's just that a lot of it is not good. I really didn't like the LBP add for example, didn't really show off the game.

Sony does advertise a ton -- and they don't do it all on TV. They do a lot of sporting event advertising, etc.

The thing with the Apple / MS comparison isn't really apt because you get a completely different experience using OS X vs using Windows. Whereas the PS3 and Xbox 360 are similarly powered gaming toys that play very many of the same games in almost the exact same way. Except one is much cheaper than the other.

UMMM, no.   Did you even think your answer through?  Apple/M$ comparison is almost exactly the same.  Apple systems cost a lot more, they do nearly the same thing and there are more similarities than differences in both OS's overall.  Almost exactly the same as M$ Xbox360/Sony PS3 comparison.

I didn't mean for Sony to copy the exact same formula as the one Apple has.  I was just giving it as an example ( that a smaller company can compete against the larger one and gain marketshare).  If anything Sony should have an easier time of it than Apple does.  Considering it has a larger percentage of the market to begin with.

Hmmmm... would i rather have Sony dump more money into actually making the games better, or more money into marketing and less money into making the game? (Halo 3 comes to mind)

The reason the PS3 doesn't sell is because it's $400: plain and simple, and killzone 2 came out at a slow time in game sales. You also had Resident Evil 5 conflicting with it 2 weeks after it's release, which if you cut out japan it sold better than. I don't think it has as much to do with marketing as a lot of people seem to think. I'm sure KZ2 will have long legs, it's too good quality to not, so stop with the 'should of done much better' stuff. Most of my more casual friends didn't get KZ2 because they just bought CoD:WAW last year and were still playing it.

I don't see how better/more marketing is a 'good' thing really. From a moral standpoint it's a bad thing. I don't want some company spending money in order to convince me what makes me happy. Let the products speak for themselves.

M$ spent plenty of money on both advertising and the actual game itself.  Simple fact is Sony could learn a few things from M$'s advertising department.  It doesn't matter if Halo 3 was a pure pile of shit, it sold well and a majority of those sales were from a great add campaign.

The simple fact is there is no need whatsoever in skimping on the marketing of any game.  If you spend tons of cash developing it why not go that extra mile and cap it off with a good add campaign.

well a comapny liek Sony probably goes to an exteranl ad agency for their advertising, so blame either Sony's marketing budget or some ad agency

Sony advertise a lot actually however these are not mostly television adverts. During all the premiership matches I see the Playstation logo as well as the FA cup, that is anything but cheap to say the least.

The TV adverts however are terribly silly, as though I would have had to taken magic mushrooms to undestand them.

That is their biggest problem with adds.  If they could come up with something that isn't stupid or gimmickie they will do fine.
