Forums - Nintendo - Twestern, I stand corrected on porting costs. They're more than I thought.

Very good post. I still think it was a mistake to try and make this game run on the RE4 engine.

Do you agree with that?

Well what engine did they have avaialable that supported that kind of game better? There aren't that many designed to handle loads of enemies, and most are made for the HD systems.

And I did not realize his name was spelled with an "m". Oops.

It sounds like they had to completely redo the game for this port anyway, so I was thinking why should they even bother using an old engine?

Here is my thought process:

1. RE 4 Engine ==> Saves money ==> Doesn't fit the game well ==> Subpar game ==> Subpar sales

2. New Engine ==> More expensive ==> Fits game well ==> Better game ==> Better sales ==> Use new engine on Dead Rising 2 port

Maybe the second scenario is just wishful thinking on my part.

What you have said perfectly sums up the clusterf--k situation that Capcom could be in and also what they think about Wii. All other companies are prioritising a Wii version of many games and DR2 was certainly a perfect excuse to build an engine. DR1 didn't do that well on 360 so they are just shooting themselves in the foot.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Doesn't mean better sales. Aren't you all forgetting how much games you hate sell on the Wii? Why does this rule magically change when it comes to CTYD?

How about Capcom just isn't marketing it, when even Ubisoft knows even the shovelware sells best with marketing.

I don't mean you. I meant those claiming the game's sales are due to it being bad (without actually qualifying what is supposed to be so bad about it).

Also, where is the proof the engine limited the game? Where?

No circumstantial proof is not it. Things in the games only prove what is in the games, not that the engine did that? Who here has a list of the full technical specs that tell us what the RE4 engine can and can't do, that proves Capcom made the wrong choice of engine?

Are you talking about the 'multiple millions' quote?

That isn't accurate, especially since DR; CTYD isn't really a port.

In the case of that game, Sven stated it cost about as much as an original game at the bottom of that page. So even though it's not an actual port, it still cost a lot.

I just remembered that Too Human is proof a custom engine only automatically means more money, not better graphics, and especially not better sales.

Sure there were other factors involved, but that also proves that notion bunk, as the notion assumes that each naturally leads to the other, when it doesn't.

Plus I really doubt that the RE4 engine hurt the game's graphics, given what it did for the graphics in RE4, and the fact that this engine is not the same engine used on the GC, but a modified one made for RE4 Wii Edition.
