Forums - Gaming - Does "Unbiased" have to mean you dont have an "Opinion"?

I think that if you say you are bias you are kind of being unbias. You are exposing the faults in your opinion and in such betraying yourself.

You can be unbiased and have an opinion. A unbiased person looks at all sides and takes the best information from all of them. They also aren't afraid of going against their personal emotions for the sake of the truth.

I am not saying that they are always right, though.

Opinion is what you believe. Bias is more in how you present things.

I can take and report the facts without giving my opinion. The context in which I place them and what I include/exclude can show bias. That may give insight into my opinion, but such may never be stated.

Meanwhile, opinion is directly stated and is very hard to debate with facts because it is by definition a belief. Religious dogma and political philosophies are generally of this type.

The ultimate objective is to present the main facts and let people form their own ideas. But that is much more difficult to do in practice than it is in the abstract.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

In my opinion even a report is an opinion. =-)

A report is based off the gathering of data- the data that is used is based off of the person's opinion on the validity of the source.

The source could be corrupted as well- even computer programs can be faulty due to the opinion of the programmer who thought this code or that function should or should not be added.

It's always in the intent.

nice to see a lot of intelligent and mature answers in this thread.^^

What I would like to say is if I look at three platforms, decide what I feel is a strength and weakness to each one, deliberate and choose only ONE, does that make me biased for then on out? I gave an even assessment to the situation and chose the best to my ability. I could say, "I think____is better", althought that is just my "opinion", if I give evidence to my conclusion does it have to be "biased"?

 Poopy!

sorry had to be rebellious. =-)

Actually Mike, in certain cases opinions are used as a foundation for assumptions, however they aren't assumptions that are conclusive and instead are used to gather an hypothesis.

That could considered a good opinion because of it's productive manner and unbiased regardless of execution.

Oop's I'm wrong; I just remembered Social-Darwinism.

You're biased from your human experience since when you're born, so the question is useless because unbiased is a false concept.

Good point. By definition any opinion will involve some sort of bias, no matter how generally accepted by society that opinion is.

Maybe a better question to ask is to whether or not facts can be biased?

Yes it's very possible to be unbiased and have an unbiased opinion. It's also unlikely that you will find a majority of people capable of this. Often people willingly colour their opinions with certain values. It's easy, but the skills possible to train objectivity are their. It just takes time patience and a willingness to accept other people. Being unbiased is not easy and social habits of bias is easily picked up.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.
