Forums - Sony Discussion - Do you think first/second party support will continue?

The only example I can think of being done right now would be the Killzone 2 + PS3 bundle which is £280, it is definitely not selling at a higher price than just the PS3..........£20 less actually.

Uncharted's 2.5 million sales did not come from pure sales as it was bundled, be that an extremely expensive bundle which gave a lot for your money. Also one has to factor in platinum sales which Uncharted has been for a very long time now, cost is much cheaper compared to non-platinum games.

$15 is a number I estimated taking into account that the EU rarely has games at full price. eg LBP has been £12 for a very long time now meaning Sony are selling the games to retailers for peanuts. If games really are $60 in NA for the whole of the duration of sales (unlikely) for first party games Sony get something like $25. Did not pull that number out my ass, someone at Neogaf broke down where that $60 goes.

$15 overall WW seems to high come to think of it, $10 seems a better prediction.

Keep this going, would like to know other peoples opinions. Also GT portable is pretty much confirmed, PD will definitely be around for a long time.

When it comes to sales I want games to sell well not to say "ha ha the game on my system sold better then the system you own" but so that development of games continue. First party PS3 games have done less then stellar and one would think the first party PS3 games cost quite a large amount to make.

Only 9 games from first and second party (sony fund the game development) have passed 1 million sales and all those games look to be of high budget. Also many were heavily bundled so Sony did not make a penny from those sales, R:FOM and Motorstorm came with every bundle at the beginning, they were unofficial but all stores gave the option of choosing one of those games. It would be nice if someone had an idea about HD development costs in general but from here I would think the Sony funded games are not making profit.

Of the upcoming games GT5, GOW III, Uncharted 2, next R&C game, MAG are the guaranteed million sellers but I do wonder if sales would cover all those development costs, besides GT5.

With all that said do you think first party support will continue? I hope it continues but am doubtful, sure Sony get more income for every copy sold for a first/second game compared to third parties but I doubt they are making sufficient profit to continue. Studios will be sold off to other companies is my guess.

Ironically I rent games so need to stop with that -_- .....expect 3rd parties :P

First and second party games are the only games keeping the PS3 a float. You better hope First and second party support will continue.

Fixed. Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV HATE being forgotten btw

@ Legend: and why would Sony lose a lot of $ this year? That's not making much sense.

OT: Yes, their 1st and 2nd Party support will continue.

Games don't have to sell millions to be really good...

Look at ICO, it was confirmed from a dev that they shipped only about 800k copies of it and it is known to hardcore gamers one of the best to ever grace the PS2. Shadow of Colossus only had 930k according to VGC, and you have to know that it is regarded as the #1 game ever made for PS2.

Also look at Valkyria Chronicles. Even though it's third party, it's known as the best RPG game this gen so far. It sold only about 400k copies worldwide also.

Just because games don't sell 1mil, doesn't mean it's not good.

Not talking about the quality of these first party sales, i'm saying is developemt financially viable for Sony? If a game like Uncharted cost $20 million my answer has been answered which is yes, Sony are making back the costs of these games.

Sales are down YoY, and it's not just the Playstation brand that is suffering.  They're losing marketshare with their HD TVs, music players, cell phones, etc.  All of Sony appears to be under siege and with the World's economies still mired in recession it will be surprising if Sony manages not to lose money.

Yes it is a good point. Even though first party games have been very good on the PS3, they have little to no dominance brand wise. That is why games like Call of Duty: World at War, MGS4, and GTA IV have been able to blow them out of the water. While MS's first and second party have really dominated. And no one needs to mention that Nintendo's have dominated as it is pretty apparent.

I mean despite the quality, their properties have been quite weak. It's great for 3rd parties but not so great for Sony because like you said those budgets have been pretty high. Of course they will continue them but they need some big sellers. Can't live off 3rd party exclusives or multi-plat games forever. Now GT5 will break this trend, but can't do it off one game. Hopefully God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 will step up. Sad to see not many of them sell like their quality like they would on MS and Ninty's system. Keep trying Sony you'll hopefully reap the benefits of the quality games soon.

I'm not talking about Singstar though, I'm talking about the games with high production values which one thinks would need 1 million to at last break even ala Uncharted 2.

Well, if a million sales is the criteria, then I don't see why they wouldn't be continued to be made as Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Ratchet and Clank, and the first Uncharted sold well over a million.  And Infamous, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, God of War III and Gran Turismo 5 are all going to sell well over a million too.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.

This I agree with, sooner rather than later Sony will catch a break with a game and that should hopefully start the ball rolling with other first party titles. It's darn obvious GT5 is going to be the one which does it and if it really does release by March 2010 the other first party titles will also benefit greatly in terms of sales.
