I have to stress this part of the article again...

"Detainees were shaved, stripped and photographed nude."

This was before they were even interrogated... Right from the start, all of their human dignity is taken away. I don't understand how someone with any compassion can approve of this.

Their heads were shaved to prevent lice. The nude photos were to provide proof they were not beaten.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Just terrible that this would happen in the 21st century in a supposedly civilized country.

You are absolutely naive to the way the world works then.  If a suspect has information that will definitively aid in the protection of our country and countrysmen we have all the right in the world to gather that information.

Really? Please prove that assertion.

I thought you had such things as laws and signed conventions.

@Tyrannical: What's the big concern with lice in this case? Why not give them a pedicure as well in case they have athlete's foot? Regarding the photos, where's the precedent for doing that?

You're right, dead right. But dead just the same if you can't get the information out of them.

Saying that we're all going to die if we don't use torture? Yeah I think thats fearmongering mate.

Also I'm in complete agreement that terrorism is a terrible thing that causes a loss in public confidence and causes threat and paranoia. However the only thing that sets the USA apart as a 'free country' is its human rights and throwing some of the most crucial of those away as the result of terrorism seems to be both irrational and defeatist.

Who says we're all going to die if we don't use torture.  Got ANY links on that?  I've never heard those words uttered.  Besides that,  I don't want to see 4,000 innocent Americans die because some crazy Arabs don't like Jewish people.

I'm not sure I believe in giving a suspected terrorist or prisoner of war (Actively trying to harm our soliders) a full, wide array of options in terms of their freedom is the way to go about this.

I'm using a broad brush because human rights are a fairly broad thing. There is a reason the most important document relating to human rights is titled 'Universal Declaration of Human Rights' because they are meant to be universal. So no, I don't believe that you have the right to torture innocent people (or people who have not been found guilty of any crime) because there is a slim possibility that it could prevent a terror attack. In my opinion the 'in reason' in your post stops before torture.

If you aren't a US citizen the same freedoms, laws, rules and regulations should not apply to you.  It's not fair but it's the way of the world.

Of course its not, but this little bit of hypocrisy is relevant to this debate. If you're going to point out any that the left are guilty of that are relevant then be my guest.

Hypocrisy is never relevant in a 'debate'.  It's just a deflection technique to attempt to move away from the actual subject line.

It all goes down to interpretation.  And you can count me in as someone who believes the US Governments primary responsibility is to protect it's citizens by any means necessary.

You can cry all day about the 'torture' of these poor, poor, PoWs or Terror Cells in the US.  But shed no tear for the poor, poor thousands of innocent people who lost their life in the Twin Towers?   Hypocrisy at it's finest.  This really is the whole "Kill Babies, Save Whales"  argument all over again.

Bush can get criticized for a lot of things during his presidency.  Protecting the citizens of the United States is not one of them.

What country are you in by the way?

8 Years of republican domination... how nice...

How convenient....

Maybe a rectal exam to check for colon cancer as well?

Just caring for the prisoner's well being...

Of course ! Waterboarding is the easiest way to wash your hairs without having some water in your face....

God bless (Bush's-) America...

Sure we do.  A contract, a law, a signed piece of paper is exactly that.  Countries toss them aside and trash them at their leisure.  When it comes to doing what is in the best interest for our country,  we should take whatever steps necessary to accomplish this goal.

So who gets to decide what's the country's best interest and what steps are best to accomplish the goal?

Maybe Obama should throw away the constitution and all the laws. I'm sure it's much easier for him to take the steps towards the country's best interest while unhindered by those pesky laws.
