"Development of Final Fantasy VII began in 1994 and the game was originally intended for the SNES , but it was later moved to the Nintendo 64 . As the system's cartridges lacked space, Square decided to release the game for Sony's PlayStation instead." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_fantasy_7

It was a coin toss between the Playstation and the Sega Saturn .If Soft decided to put their masterpiece on the Saturn, Sony's reign of dominance that lasted for over a decade would have been cut short with Sega taking its place .

Theres no "if" for Nintendo they stubbornly wanted to stick to cartridges and.....well the rest as you all know is history.

Square announced on 01/12/1996 it would be developing Final Fantasy VII for the Play Station

Sega Saturn was released 05/11/1995

Sony PlayStation was released 12/03/1994

What is your source for Square considering the Saturn?  I had never heard that before.

And certainly if FF7 was on Saturn, so would have been FF8 and FF9. Plus some other third-party games would have followed.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Not true. GT came out long after PS1 was established as the dominant platform. FF7 made the difference when Saturn and PS1 were still duking it out in the trenches. Neither had a substantial lead to justify exclusive development...

Long? GT was released like 9 months after FFVII? And magazines where already talking about GT before FFVII was released.

What came first the chicken or the egg?

as many already pointed out GT was released like a year after FF VII . GT success is from the great expectations gamers looked foward to on the PS because of the roar FF VII caused.

1. FF7 made the difference in early 1996 when it was announced.

2. GT sold howmuch it did due to word of mouth. it had decent but not amazing debut. We only have Japanese week by week data but mind you it sold 673,618 in japan first week. Versus 2,025,834. Which one do you think had more hype.

The bottom line is, PS1 would have still won that gen as that gen was all about $$$, and sony had most of it. They could buy Psygnosis, naughty dog and any other top of the line developer. But Sega would have had much larger chunk if FF7 was announced for its console...In japan especially where it would have owned all.

Wii Sports?

Then again, I suppose that's 1 game and 1 controller that made the difference. :P

It didn't single handedly turn a generation. As you say, the controller made a huge difference, and without Mario games it could not have "turned the generation"
