The difference is noticeable, but you need to have a big screen as well as sit the perfect distance away from it as well.
It depends on the size of the screen you want as well. If you are only wanting 40" or less, then stick with 720p. You will not notice the 1080p on less than a 40" screen. If you want a 50" screen, then get 1080p.
Also, cost plays a huge part as well. If you can get a 42" 1080p for $300 more than a 37" 720p, then go for it. But if you are paying $500 or more for this jump...I wouldn't bother. But the important part is the size of screen you want.
