Sorry about it, but my first was IV.

My first Final Fantasy was FFVI. I ended up disliking it when I first played it, not being a big fan of RPGs before.
After playing many RPGs later, I played It again later and liked it. However, it is my second favorite Final Fantasy game. After FFVIII. Which caters more to my tastes in RPGs. (Exploration, item collection, focus on characters and character customization)
My first was 1, and now I think that one may be the worst just after Final Fantasy 2. If we consider FFX-2 as part of the series, then I'd probably rather play FF1 (NES) instead of THAT.
The Best for me is 7.
Something like this:
7>6>12>10>5>8>9>4>3>1>2>X-2

hehe... and I thought it was strange someone actually has it as his favorite...

Lol. X-2 rapes FF1 any day. FF1 is near story-less, it's character less, it's almost fun-less.
My 1st one was THE 1st one... FFII, III and IV were my favorites at the time, V didn't pass IV, but VI did so it was my new favorite, i enjoy VII as much as VI so i gave them a tie, and then VIII came up, and blowed me away, X did it too and came close second...
So it's this way:
Favorite: VIII, X, VI-VII, IV, XII, IX, V, XI, III, II, I
So the 1st is my least favorite...
My first FFs were actually on gameboy, and weren't part of the FF series outside Japan, I think. They were called... Final fantasy adventure II and III? It's confusing, because Final fantasy adventure one is actually Seiken Dentetsu I, the precursor to secret of mana, but 2 and 3 were Saga games in Japan, I think. They played a lot more like early Final Fantasies than more recent Saga games, however.
Then, I played some of Final Fantasy I and all of Final Fantasy IV at a friend's house, but FF VI came out right after I finally convinced my parents to buy me a SNES, so it was the first one I owned, and it's still my favorite. Though I do enjoy every game in the series, and have finished all of them except VIII and XII. Still have to run through those two (unfortunately lost my save game to VIII.)
Oh yeah, to make it easier:
Favorite: FFVI
First: FFI First beaten: IV
