Forums - Microsoft - Netflix: It's a terrific hit on 360. Exclusively on 360 "for now".

NetFlix is exclusive to 360 for now

Netflix has told us that its streaming service on game consoles is exclusive to Xbox 360 for the time being, although when asked about its future plans the company didn't rule out the possibility of taking its movie and TV offerings to other platforms.

“Netflix is always looking for ways to grow the service. For now, Netflix streaming on game consoles is exclusively on the Xbox 360 - and it’s a terrific hit,” a spokesperson said. “More than one million Netflix members who are Xbox Gold members have watched more than 1.5 billion minutes of movies and TV episodes instantly over the internet from Netflix via their Xbox 360.”

Netflix’s popularity among US-based Xbox 360 users since its launch on the console back in November 2008 has led to continued speculation that the company would move to roll out the service on other platforms such as the PS3 and Wii.

That possibility appeared to be heightened by a recent job posting on the company’s website for an Engineering Leader—Gaming Platforms with “years of experience” building and leading the development of games on current-gen consoles. “You are familiar with several of those consoles, the technical hurdles associated with them, and the means of navigating those hurdles,” the adcontinues.

The job posting followed recent reports suggesting that Netflix had distributed surveys to consumers in a bid to gauge Wii and PS3 owners' interest in its movie and TV content.

When asked about potential plans to expand its operations outside of the States, the Netflix spokesperson simply told us that “Netflix is available in the U.S. only.”

I for one would love for this to come to other consoles. If this comes to PS3 and/or Wii without the need for an added subscription cost (Looking at you XBox Gold), then surely MS would allow this for no added cost to Silver members no?

That would be great news.

Discuss.

I just go to the mailbox like the average person, but then again...

Apparently Netflix is looking into offering their service to the Wii:

Well, the 360 shares 80-90% of its library with the PS3, yet they don't let you play online for free. Why would this be any different?

I don't see how Netflix can be provided for no extra cost on part of the consumers...

Are you saying that Sony and Nintendo are going to pay for all the costs?

How would they measure the "potential" subscribers?

What is the return in the investment? How important is Netflix to the sales of consoles? I don't know that answer, and I think it's simply too hard/vague to do so.

I love Netflix. I have a 2 disc plan for myself and my fiancee. I set it up so we both have separate queues. I get my blu rays in the mail(I have a shitty Magnavox BR player) and watch instant stuff on the 360. Great setup for me. I am currently going through Michael Palin's Around the World in 80 Days documentary on instant and have Appaloosa on blu ray. My fiancee is currently burning through the Sliders seasons on instant.

The only thing I would like more of is HD content. I already watched pretty much all of the decent stuff they have in HD. 30 Rock, The Office, I need to watch Heroes, and a couple movies. Overall, everyone should give Netflix a try. The turnaround time is great as well.

The consumers pay the costs when they rent the movies, no?

Making a Netflix disc/channel for the Wii will bring Netflix revenue from people subscribing their service. It's no different from offering software for PCs to stream movies from Netflix.

Unlike the games Netflix already has it's own subscription cost outside of LIVE. I originally figured Netflix wouldn't have any added costs since games like FFXI can be played by Silver members since it already has a subscription cost outside of LIVE.

Unfortunatetly this same policy didn't work when it came to Netflix.

If people had a PS3 and a 360 for example and would have online mainly for movie watching would they spend the extra $50 a year or just do it for free on a PS3?

I know which answer would be smarter.

This has nothing to do with the games.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about any form of video streaming service that gets yout o see movies/tv soaps?

I mean if I wanna watch a movie I'll watch it for free online....call it piracy if you want to.....but in these tough recession times if the option is available I will take it.
