Of course it's an RPG. With Zelda-ish elements though.

No leveling.  No RPG.  Action-adventure.

Actually, on further reflection, Soriku is right.

The essence of role-playing is having control over the decisions your character makes. That can include the way your character grows his skills, but I'd argue that having dynamic NPCs which react to your decisions and actions is actually more important to role-playing than allocating skill points. I think this game might actually be more of an RPG than any previous Final Fantasy game.

Sorry, but this doesn't work as a description for the genre because most JRPG's give you very little choice. In fact, it is very difficult to distinct an RPG from an action-adventure as soon as the games go away from the known paths. The safest way is usually the battle system, as long as it's turn-based, you can be sure that you're playing an RPG. If it isn't, the case gets difficult.

NPC's are another important factor. In action-adventures, they are usually rare and not that important to the story. There is usually a couple of them and they reappear. In RPG's however, you meet new ones all the time and talk to them a lot. They are essentially for the story.

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

O RLY?!11!?

Well in that case, Chaos Legion DMC4, God of War 3, Dynasty Warirors and many others are "essence" JRPGS? Mmm, i get it now, then that must mean Folklore a true JRPG then, awesome im save this and discuss it with certain VG members later.

I get the feeling you've never played an actual RPG in your life. You might be shocked to learn that the most in-depth (dare I say, hardcore?) RPGs don't use numbers or levels at all.

And if we go by your definition that a game that has leveling is an RPG then Castlevania, CoD4, and tons of sports games are considered RPGs.

I don't deny the fact they have some elements like in RPGs...but they're not RPGs.

Besides, it's not just the stat system that makes an RPG an RPG IMO.

That doesn't make sense... so if a game like FF:TCB has RPG like elements yet its not, its an RPG But games like god of war 3 and DMC4 that also have this same exact status and HP/MP/SL style but its no among an "essence" rpg?

Im sorry riku, but im kinda feelin summmmm..... Hypocrisy here. <_<

Well I could have mentioned FFXIII but seeing your sig and avatar FFvXIII would be more appropriate, anyway I just think it's stupid to hate on the game because it has no leveling while you know noting else about it. I mean what if FFvXIII has no leveling will you suddenly hate on the game???

@Bolded- If info turns out (Godforbid) it doesn't have a leveling system, then YES, its apart of what makes a JRPG A frickin JRPG, without it, it might aswell be a long (In Versus XIII's case) Hack N Slash game. theres no denying this.

i have to admit, the trailers on their site do have that sort of charm.
