Actually, on further reflection, Soriku is right.

The essence of role-playing is having control over the decisions your character makes. That can include the way your character grows his skills, but I'd argue that having dynamic NPCs which react to your decisions and actions is actually more important to role-playing than allocating skill points. I think this game might actually be more of an RPG than any previous Final Fantasy game.

Well in that case, Chaos Legion DMC4, God of War 3, Dynasty Warirors and many others are "essence" JRPGS? Mmm, i get it now, then that must mean Folklore a true JRPG then, awesome im save this and discuss it with certain VG members later.

And if we go by your definition that a game that has leveling is an RPG then Castlevania, CoD4, and tons of sports games are considered RPGs.
