It'll be a while before we see Doom 4. In fact, according to id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead, they're still hiring staff for the project. But they do know one thing at least.
"It's not a sequel to Doom 3, but it's not a reboot either," Hollenshead told GameSpot. "Doom 3 was sort of a reboot."
"It's a little bit different than those, and if I told you why, I would get my ass kicked when I got back. So I'll just have to leave it at that."
Hollenshead said that fans shouldn't worry though, as everything he's seen of it suggests that it's "classic Doom." At the same time though, it's still "very much deep in development."
id Software has a lot on their plate these days, as they're also developing the multiplatform title Rage as well as Quake Live and Wolfenstein. The latter will be shown at E3, along with some "new stuff that we haven't announced yet."
Even more projects? Busy indeed.
