Forums - Sales - Wondering about Wii game sales

Im not sure about the other consoles, but the 3 Wii games with the most amount of hits on the site and the main Wii games (other than Wii Sports)(SMG;SSBB;MKWii) have combined to only 32.1 Million in sales. That means that 16.69 Million Wii owners, which is about a third (excluding people who have two or all three, in which case the number would be about half) dont own any of these games. But all of the people i know who have a Wii have 2 or 3 of those, and I couldn't imagine people would buy the Wii just for Sports and Fit. Is it normal that the most known games of a system dont sell much?

Edit: can you see the pic in my sig, cause i dont see it?

A lot of people buy it just for Wii Sports and similar games--a lot of older people see Wii Sports AS the Wii.

However, the fact that so many people buy those games shows that the Wii has a core gaer userbase at LEAST as big as those of the PS3 or 360.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

well yea, but i still cant see how you can pay $350 just for sports and fit if youre not interested in anything else

It's not hard to imagine--it's no different than buying, say, a $500 workout machine.

Also, just because they don't buy those three games doesn't mean they don't buy anything else.

I know a few people who have none of those games, but have lots of other games.

My older brother who used to play as much as I did doesn't have any of them. But he does have other games like Geometry Wars, Trauma Center, Zelda, and other games.

People just have different tastes.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Well just look at other systems.

The PS3 game with the most hits (MGS4) is owned by less than 4 million people.

The highest ranked PS2 game is owned by a lower fraction of its userbase than Galaxy, Brawl or MK:Wii.

Ignoring the people that just bought it for casual games. There're people that just don't like Mario platformers or Kart, nor brawl. Maybe they're fans of fire emblem, Zelda and Metroid

Halo3, Gears 1 & 2 combine to about 20M copies. There are about 30M 360s sold so far. So the exact same thing could be said about the 360 and its top exclusive shooters.

Gamers have diverse tastes, and most people do not purchase what are considered the "must have" games on a given console.

This point suffers from (a) selective data section and (b) lack of comparison.

The three top-selling Xbox 360 games (Halo 3, CoD4, GTA IV) have sold 26.64M -- 89.91% of the console sales of 29.63M.

The three top-selling PS3 games (GTA IV, CoD 4, MGS 4) have sold 13.65M -- 63.28% of the console sales of 21.57M.

The three top-selling Wii games (Wii Play, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii) have sold 56.69M -- 115.99% of the console sales of 48.79M.

Now people might object to Wii Play being included, so let's look at the figures with out.

The top three-selling full Wii games (Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, SSBB) have sold 42.21M -- 86.51% of the console sales -- or just slightly smaller than the percentage as the Xbox 360.

The three games listed in the OP (Mario Kart Wii, SSBB, SMG) have sold 32.09M -- 65.77% of console sales -- still a higher percentage than the top three selling PS3 games.

So even when you compare apples to oranges, the Wii comes out looking decently. And those results should not be a surprise since the Wii and PS3 have sold about the same number of games per console as one another while the Xbox 360 has a higher per console sales rate.
