Forums - General - So the new anime season has started. What are you watching?

It's that lovely time of the year when dozens of anime start up. This year we've got quite a large selection, and some pretty interesting stuff.

So far I'm watching:

Eden of the East: A very cool Bourne Identity style mystery/drama story with some good humor and fun characters. The first episode had me instantly hooked.

Dragon Ball Kai: The much anticipated "DBZ fix," DBK promises a DBZ with drastically improved pacing and remastered video and audio. Be sure to check it out if you have any interest in the franchise.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood: Finally the FMA anime to follow the manga. As a big fan of the original FMA anime I had to check this out. Very good so far, even if it is some stuff we've seen before.

Valkyria Chronicles: Admittedly nothing spectacular out of this anime yet, but as a big fan of the game I had to check it out.

Shangri-la: Stars a girl using a boomerang. Mostly watching just to see the underused weapon in action, but the setting and style seems pretty good so far.

Basquash: Easily my favorite new release so far this season. An energetic anime that embraces its ridiculous concept (of mechs playing basketball) and is just a blast to watch. Highly recommended.

So, what are you watching?

Around the Network

I think Dragon Ball Kai is going to be the first anime I've watched weekly since... well, I guess since I left home.

I'm also thinking about watching the VC series regularly.

I'll watch FMA when the manga's finished, and I'll read all of that in one go.

So far I'm watching Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Valkyria Chronicles. However, I'll probably watch Eden of the East, Basquash!, and maybe Cross Game later in the summer.

FMA:BH - I like it so far, but if I had never seen the first series I would be really confused. I think they are still trying to quickly recap for the new viewers. We'll see where it goes.

Valkyria Chronicles - I really like this so far. I've heard some people complain about the animation, but I really, really enjoy the animation. I've never played the game, so the fact that the anime looks a bit different than the game doesn't bother me. I like where the story is going so far.

How is Dragonball Kai different than Dragonball Z?

DBK is DBZ's original footage completely recut. The series is planned to be reduced from 290 episodes to about 100 episodes. In other words a lot of filler is going to be cut, as well as a lot of yelling and flexing and reaction shots lol.

So basically, I shouldn't get the feeling of "Nothing happened in that episode..." in DBK. I might check it out.

Half of episode 1 was footage from the Bardock movie, footage from the original Dragon Ball series, and footage that wasn't originally aired in English, but it managed to end at the same spot as the original airing of Episode 1. Episode 2 ends where the original episode 3 ends - episod 3 looks to leave off where Episode 5 did.

The pace is a lot more brisk.

I kind of avoided the Dragonball Z and GT movies, tv show in the past.  I've seen every episode of Dragonball (However its been so long I dont remember it all now).  So would I be in the dark or missing anything?  Or would this be a perfect substitute for everything I missed?

This would be.... basically perfect. Most of the movies are non-canonical, and the show recaps the important bits of the original series to give proper context for new viewers.

It still early but... Basquash seems to be the winner for me... Love it.. it's crazy..
Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen seems also good.. but hey it's a Mazinger so no worries about that one..

Still haven't decided which other shows I'm gonna watch... Maybe FMA: Brotherhood.. liked the first series.. but I want to check out new shows first..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Cross Game seems surprisingly good, I needed another sad anime.

Hatsukoi Limited is good for some humor.

Shinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica Crimson S could be a good action anime with a different concept. All about people singing or playing instruments to summon demons, kinda reminds me of Ar Tonelico. Cept all the singers don't have to be hot chicks.

Saki should be fun to learn something about Mahjong while I watch

K-ON! is a slice of life type High School anime about a group of girls trying to make a band, and I'm enjoying that one as well.

That's everything that stands out to me so far other than the obvious ones of FMA2 and VC.
