Depends on the game.

FPS: 10-13 hours
RPG: 30-50 hours
Action Adventure: 15-20 hours
Survival Horror: 20 hours

Just my thoughts

My sentiments exactly.

I don't have a lot of free time anymore so I'm enjoying shorter games. it becomes worse when playing games that have save points. I suppose I'm in the final 10 hours of Baten Kaitos (I have more than 50), yet not only the battles take a bit long, but I'm inside that fucking Mizuti tower which just sucks. so I haven't played BK in a while a now. on the other hand, I have already ~20 hrs on King's Bounty simply because I can open it, play some battles, explore a bit and I made some progress in a few minutes. the same with Burnout, load the game, find a race and if I have to quit playing, alright, just save and quit!

but I don't mind a longer game, as long as it doesn't become too repetitive or try to extend itself by shitty ways (BK, ToS)

i like when i get 1 hour for $1.

That's about right, although some games I will go for $2/hour if the quality is really good.

Some older games are still worth $2/hour but you can get them for $0./50 hour now.  For example, RE 4 for the wii.  By the time you add up a couple of play throughts with Leon plus the unlockable missions with Separate Ways, Assignment Ada, not to mention Mercenaries you are way over 40 hours and the game is only $20 new.

For Starcraft, if you count all the online time....  I doubt if I paid $0.10/hour.

For me, if a FPS doesn't have the multiplayer replay value of at least 50 hours, then it's not a very good FPS...  I don't care if campaign mode is only 2 hours!

Depends on the game RPG's 30hr.
Action/shooter 12hr.

I don't know, 10-12 hours for an FPS is a long time.

Most good FPS games find one or two things and do that one thing well.  Think of just about any recent FPS games and tell me what they did well and it's actually not that many things (and that's actually the general idea for most good games).  Dragging more than 10 hours out of those few good things and not making them stale is an incredibly hard thing to do.

There's a reason those FPS games are traditionally short and story games are traditionally longer.  It's not hard to drag something that one of the good things is story, it's hard to drag out single player shooting experience if that's the good thing.

as stated by a few others it depends on the genre, but further it depends on the gameplay, pacing, and numerous other design elements
Panzer Dragoon Saga is under 20 hours yet the length felt perfect
Shining force 3 is over 100 hours across all three parts and it felt perfect,
grandia 2 counter wise felt like it was dragging on forever at 25 hours
plus episodic design can alter good length, House of the dead overkill would be too long for a single sitting but designed to be taken in parts makes it's length perfect

As my life gets busier, I tend to prefer shorter games, so deduct a few hours here and there from CGI's list and I'm golden. Even his list as is is pretty decent.

Person 1: Does Valkyria Chronicles have trophies?
Person 2:  No.
Person 1: Forget it. I'm not buying it.
Person 2: Wait! It's amazing! Unique, charming, drop dead gorgeous... Hello?
