Forums - Nintendo - Wii motion plus

Does anyone else think it was a mistake to announce it for this gen? I think if nintendo had waited and put this on the Wii 2 or whatever it would be a new control mechanism to sell the Wii 2, but now that they have announced it it's to late. But the problem is, what new selling point will their next system have?

EDIT: I took out the word "gimick"

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Consoles owned: Game Cube, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP, PS1, PS2, PS3.

My prediction: NATAL WILL NOT help 360 sales. Maybe a 50-100k boost week 1, then a 30-70 k boost week 2, and back to the norm again after 3-5 weeks.

I think with their next console they're just gonna put HD, and maybe a few small gimicks here and there, to get to the casuals.

And, I don't think M+ is a mistake, it could help sales.

First problem is you labeling it as a gimmick. Yes, Nintendo makes a shitload of addons. Are you going to say rumble paks were a gimmick and motion control are gimmicks next? Shit, lets just say analog controls are gimmicks also..............

It is not a mistake.  Whatever console they produce next will include these features and it will not hamper sales.

I think motion plus will kick start Wii sales in Japan again. Next gen.... who knows with Nintendo. They will probably come out with something completely different again that none of us could guess.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

no they are going to use it to sale wii sports resort like crazy. but they are going to sale the next wii with hd.

Despite use of the word gimmick, I am going to bless this thread with a response.

From a business stand point...

I actually agree. It's unnecessary, it dilutes the Wii user-base further (Wii motes, multiple nunchucks, balance board, classic controller, Gamecube controller). While it may give third parties more oppurtunities to make small games that sell well (Carnival Games, Game Party, EA Playground, etc.), it won't help sell Wii's in the long run (more periphs?) and it more shelf space in retail....

From a gaming perspective...

It's gonna be soooooo bad ass.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

I don't know if it was a mistake or not. But I do think Nintendo's strategy has been pretty clear.

Nintendo clearly thought that Microsoft was going to try to copy the wiimote; remember at this time last year there were many people predicting just that (and with that the doom of the wii). It turned out that MS' "casual strategy" consisted of just a few small items, and nothing on the scale of what Nintendo feared, but everything Nintendo has been doing mid-2008 through mid-2009 has been a reaction to the MS announcement which never happenned.

  • Nintendo announced the wiimotion+ right before MS had their conference at E3.
  • Nintendo spent every moment that had on stage in 2008 from E3 on focusing on casual games
  • Nintendo wii releases in the back half of 2008 were all casual oriented

I think if MS had been serious about trying to get a piece of the casual market, then Nintendo would have looked like geniuses right now. But obviously MS wasn't serious, so whether that makes all this effort a mistake or not - who knows. Clearly by making the wiimote that much more powerful right now they have raised the bar for any attempts to copy them. No one can credibly say "its like the wiimote, only better" with out a controller out performing wiimotion+ come July.

The point was to defend if Sony or Microsoft made a move on motion control or a new system that used the Wii's technology. They were fighting for the expanded market (thus the press conference).

I assume Wii 2 will be a vastly different system.

I concur with astrosmash but also add, by appealing to the casual market Nintendo has given themselves the problem of needing to keep them constantly engaged with new things to keep them from losing interest.

Look at sales in Japan. Nintendo can't get WM+ out soon enough in Japan to salvage sales. Unfortunately, I haven't heard of any support for it there. Tennis, golf, and Red Steel 2 won't sell much in Japan so for now it'll be all up to Wii Sports Resort.

^Problem with Japan is that they love hand helds...
