Forums - Nintendo - Wii games can flop - But don't blow it out of proportion...

A lot of people on this site have become very vocal as of late against the people who defend low sales of Wii games, saying that the game can't have cost very much to develop and therefore didn't flop. This is a thread to look at both sides of this argument. First off, it's a fact, stated by many game developers, that it's a lot cheaper to develop Wii games than it is to develop HD games. Add to this fact, that despite the cost differences to begin with, HD games are usually much bigger projects (pure example, Soul Calibur IV vs Soul Calibur Legends). Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Wii games can't flop. That's not what this thread is about. So let me adress some of the games people usually bring up when they talk about Wii flops.

No More Heroes - This game is not a flop and people need to stop mentioning it in such context. Everybody involved with the development of this game has said that it was a success, it was the best sold game Suda 51 ever made, he's making a sequel for the first time ever, and they threw a party at it's sales. This game isn't a flop, and if you say it is you're only making a fool out of yourself.

Deadly Creatures - Can you say floptastic? This game can not have made a profit with the abysmal sales figures it's showing. Sad to say, because I've heard from most that it's a pretty good game.

Zack & Wiki - This game is kind of a 50-50 deal. 50% of people will say it's not a flop, while 50% of people will say it is. I'll say that it is. Capcom have clearly stated at several instances that they weren't too impressed with this game... I can very well imagine that it broke even, but I don't think it brought in much profit for Capcom. I think a lot of this is due to Capcom themselves, and mismanaged resources, but the reason for bad sales doesn't really matter, I suppose.

MadWorld - If you've played this game, you have to have noticed how low budget it is. There aren't many character models at all, the "cutscenes" are pretty much only stills, there weren't really many people working on the game... Honestly, I think the most expensive part with this entire game must've been hiring Steven Blum and John DiMaggio as voice actors. And even that can't have been very expensive...

I just want to clear up discrepancies. What games can be accepted as flops, and what games can't? There is no way in hell No More Heroes can, that's for sure. I honestly don't think MadWorld can either, for the reasons I list.

Feel free to elaborate on your opinions and such, and you can suggest games for me to add in the OP as well if you want. This is an open discussion to declare which games are flops and which games are not.

Its too early to call Madworld a flop or otherwise. Also if Capcom said they were disapointed in Z+W, it could be it didn't make money. I remember that guy from Capcom laughing at our numbers for the game, yes I know he doesn't like the Wii but it still doesn't prove he was making stuff up.

Tease.

haha i didn't even know deadly creatures come out. Kind of hard when no one advertises these things.

afaik there were some contradictory statements made by Capcom representatives concerning Z&W sales, profit etc.

OT: Deadly Creatures is the only obvious flop here, it was a flop even before the release date. No system will sell this kind of games, just beacuse of the fact it's hardly appeal to anybody.

If only they don't make a game in which you play as arachnids and the like.

Its hard to say, but not making money would be a minor flop considering the risks taken to make games. (This applies to every game)

Tease.

You have to keep in mind that these are the same forums where people gladly scream that Wii and DS are still "fads" despite destroying their competition. For this to be a sales site, facts and logic are frighteningly scarce as of late. What you've written should be common sense, but...we'll see how many people actually follow it.

What I find the most strange is that I've never really hard anyone admit to a flop on a non-Nintendo platform. Whenever something remotely anticipated hits the Wii or DS the forums and game pages are flooded with the excited screams of "FLOP FLOP SHOULDN'T HAV BEN ON NINTENDO CONSOLE FLOP FLOPZ!11" Something flops on another platform and no one bats an eyelash. Bring it up and people will refuse to acknowledge it. There was massive trolling over GTA: CW sales and that's a game that's going to sell millions. I don't think I've heard a single person talk about Resistance: Retribution's sales and this is just a few months after massive Resistance 2 hype and all this talk about how this massive franchise was going to take down Gears 2. There are countless attacks on No More Heroes despite its success and a sequel announced yet no one seems to be concerned about the future of Mirror's Edge.

I agree with this however games like lair and haze are considered flops so it's not like there are no instances at all..

Well they were "savior-class" games, it was hard to ignore them because they were the only subject. It was mostly other people pointing it out anyway. I remember the Lair meltdowns being quite epic. It was awhile before those hyping finally accepted what happened. Besides, it's not like they don't hide behind a defense. The games being bad is quite reasonable, but you never quite hear the fanboy indignation over that defense that you will over any Wii game and why it did/didn't perform a certain.

But I think the hypocrisy is quite damaging because it's this blatant obsession with Wii/DS games that's making these people oblivious to what really matters. Chinatown Wars is not a flop, never was and never will be, and yet fanboys just harp on it constantly. Meanwhile Resistance: Retribution sinks like a rock.  GTA is not going to impact the immediate future of the DS, so its success or failure isn't even as important as people make it out to be. On the other hand, Resistance: Retribution is one of Sony's first steps to reviving their dead platform outside of Japan. If this failed what does that imply for the games to follow? I think Sony's approach is flawed but no one is talking about. Where is the Resistance hype from last fall? Why are the Sony fans not supporting the PSP? No one really talks about it...

I noticed that as well. It seems like the Wii always has to PROVE something. It has to prove it can sell core games, 3rd party games, rated-M games, etc. Wanted flopped, no one cares. 50 Cent: Blood on The Sand flop, not a peep. Facebreaker K.O. Party sold more on the Wii than PS3/360 combined, but since it sucks so much,no one cares.

I don't know, but people still think the Wii is a threat to "hardcore" gaming, when in reality, it is receiving the most unique titles this generation..
