Forums - Sony - Why do so many people assume that God of War III will be a system seller?

It has a rather hardcore following even if their numbers are small. It'll move a few units in NA, but not much more than that.

It'll be somewhat like Yakuza in Japan, but with a much smaller percent increase in weekly sales.

That sounds accurate.

Hell, I even got a PSP just to play Chains of Olympus.

GOW has a hardcore following and people on gaming forums are really hyped for this game. Hardcore franchise + gaming forum = extreme hype

I know really shocking stuff, almost the amount of hype there was on gaming fourms when Wii Fit was announced.

Edit - Your gonna get the usual suspects whom calling basically every game to release on a certain console a system seller but I have not seen sane people calling it so. I see people calling FFXIII in Japan and GT5 in EU system sellers, not this one though.

Hardcore gamers which already own the console? The only people I ever hear of talking about the game are already PS3 owners.

Tease.

Depends on your definition of system seller. If we're talking just moving units, ex: KZ2, Yakuza 3, Halo Wars, then yes it will be a system seller. Btw, you talk about insane # predictions, such as?

This, except for Halo Wars. That game saw system sales decrese the week of its release, except in America where they increased by 1k.

Probably looking at mid 6k figures in hardware units moved, tops. And that's not going to be over one or two weeks.

For many, mainly big fans of the franchise who don't already own a PS3, it will be the tipping point.

But for most, there are enough other games available now on the PS3 to justify buying one if you have the money now, or simply waiting for that big price drop many seemed to expect would happen for the 2008 holidays. And then Q2 2009... and then the big E3 announcement...

If all the stars align and we see a big price drop to $299 on or about when GoWIII is released, it goes without saying there will be a huge spike in sales that can't be entirely attributed to either one game, big as it may be, or the price drop a lot of buyers have been expecting.

What we will see after a price drop is a sustained increase in overall sales, much like after the $399 40GB SKU, which really won't have much to do with GoWIII a month after initial release.

I'm really not sure why many would think Halo Wars would be a true system seller in the first place.

Sure, if you were new to RTS games and were a strong supporter of the Halo franchise it would seem like the ideal time to start playing, but as it were, gamers don't buy consoles to play RTS games, and the strongest supporters of Halo would have already bought the hardware for Halo 3.

I'm curious to see how ODST will move hardware, but I suspect we'll see big software sales and only a minimal to moderate increase in hardware sales.

It is not a system seller, only games like MGS, GT and Halo can have that distinction, the reason many people rave about this game is because it's the premiere title for the genre and has a very hardcore and devoted following that absolutely love it (this include myself).

Have a look around the forum, there are many praise with regards to the game and fanboy waxing lycrical about how much ownage this game will be (I agree with them), but rarely do you see people predicting this will shift a truckload of ps3.

The only time I've seen those prediction at all is with GoW3 is listed as part of a series of lineup that form the backbone of the PS3 upcoming exlcusive.

Wasn't there a poll somewhere that said that the majority of the people who would buy GOW3 did not own PS3's yet? If that is actually the truth then I could see a sales spike on the release of the game.

End of 2009 sales predictions:

PS3 - 33 Million     360 - 40 Million    Wii - 75 Million

who's to say it wont attract people new to the series like me?

well ive played 2, but never owned it.
