I'd love to see a Chinese stereotype guy in the new one, that'd so make my day if he does jump kicks like in the arcade, oh god I'd love that so much.

Well I think racial stereotypes are an industry-wide problem, so every time I see it happen I think it's lame. It's already bad enough that the vast majority of games have hunky buff white dudes, badass streetsmart black dudes, scantily clad women with breasts that would break their backs, and Asian kung fu masters and computer whizzes. That said, yeah this game isn't as bad as most and it's Nintendo. It's really hard to be offended by Nintendo. They're so friendly they can sneak this stuff in and I won't care. But I can understand why this would bother people. My post was more serious than I intended I guess. I played the first 4 matches, so I've only seen the first 4 intros. It's basically just "haha he's French and a sissy," "haha he's German and dumb," "haha he's gay," and "haha he's fat and eats a lot." And now that there's voice acting, you get to hear Doc and all his blackness. But I do think this game handles masculinity better than most games. Instead of being a giant steroid-driven beefcake of death, you're a scrawny kid who makes a living by beating the hell out of giant supermen. |
I never thought of them as malicious. The game was made by the japanese, and their own boxer who's name escapes me at the moment, is just as over the top as all the rest.
Stereotypes can be fun, so long as they don't go into that malicious territory. Inspector Clouseau from the Pink Panther would have been really boring if not for his over the top frenchness.
I didn't think you were raving mad about it, or anything. It's just weird the hubbub that things bring about now, especially with the web. The incident with RE5, and people screaming racism was, I think, the absolute peak of this insanity. Nobody seemed to mind that a bunch of spaniards got wasted in RE4.
With that said, the new punchout better have a transgendered midget or I'm going to be really upset.

HATING OPHELIA- Coming soon from Markosia Comics!
Oh please, the Punch Out from the Arcade had a character named Vodka Drunkinsky, you may recognize him, because Ninty tought it was too much of a stereotype and not kid-rated and when they made the NES version they changed it the name to Soda Popinsky...
Remember Piston Honda??? saying "Sushi, Kamikaze, Fujiyama, Nipponichi"???
Punch Out was always like this, it's too late to calling political correctness on this one (and thank the lord for that)
Ninty used a lot of stereotypes back in the days, and no one cared... Hell, people still don't care that the most successful gaming franchise is based on a middle-aged italian plumber from brooklyn...

Well, to be honest RE4 was quite different:
- Spanish people are not still elaborating an ethnic history in which the most relevant subject is oppression until very recent past from other ethnicities
- The villagers in RE4 were not depicted as stereotypes. Let them speak english or french and you could say the game was set in Oxfordshire or Normandy. If they were all wielding muletas and dressed up as toreadors I bet Spanish would have something to say about the game. In RE5 you got body-painted, weed-gown-clad, shield-masked, spear-throwing villagers...
I understand that the Japanese culture has historically been a secluded one, but that doesn't excuse them from learning today to go beyond bigotry. Asian-american people hated the Mickey Rooney character in "Breakfast at Tiffany" and rightly so. I guess we can ask Japanese works that depict other cultures the same respect that was asked for after that western work... and that came up in '61.

Before we even go into resident evil 5 the intro enough was there.
""LOOK OUT CHRIS! POOR BLACK PEOPLE FIGHTING OVER A DRUG DEAL!""
Me- Well thats a bit on the nose...what next a tribal village with spear chucking, wooping savages?
later....
""LOOK OUT CHRIS! WOOPING SPEAR CHUCKING SAVAGE BLACK PEOPLE!""
me-

Times have changed. In the 80's, it was okay to make fun of Russia, have insulting stereotypes, or get drunk and rape a raccoon. Nowadays, people are way too sensitive. I applaud Nintendo for having enough balls to say "No. This is what Punch Out is all about. We ain't changing it for nobody (bad grammar, Nintendo!) !!"
I'm buying.

I came into this topic specifically to quote The Foreigner. That was kind of spooky.
| The Ghost of RubangB said: Well the game is really offensive, and it always has been. But it's not the 80's anymore, so it's even weirder by today's standards. I actually can't believe they added a gay disco dancer. They even play up Glass Joe's Frenchness more than ever, possibly to capitalize on how much Americans are supposed to hate the French? Nintendo has the right to use bad stereotypes in their game, and we all have the right to complain. Either way, the game is fun as hell. I fought the first 4 matches and it was great. I can't wait for it to come out so I can try the multiplayer. I'm definitely getting it. |
If you're really offended I think you really need to question why you're so sensitive ...
Something I have noticed in my life is that quite often the people who "Should" be offended by stereotypes are the ones who find them the funniest (if the stereotype is well created); part of the reason for this is that stereotypes tend to have some basis in reality and the people who "Should" be offended know people who are like the stereotype presented which makes it funnier to them.
With that said, I think people are reading too much into these stereotypes because (in most cases) they are playing up boxing related stereotypes that have existed for a very long time, or they're making fun of famous boxers. Von Kaiser (for example) is meant to be a reference to the bare knuckle boxing that is seen in a lot of movies representing the 1800s.
Wow this complaining about this is really political correctness going absolutely mad. Game uses stereotypes but that's the part of it, people should stop being so damn sensitive and have some common sense.
I would've been mad if they took the stereotypes out.
It makes the characters have distinguishable personality. Plus, pretty much everything gets discriminated against in Punchout, not just one race ( I don't even know what to call it, I barely ever acknowledge it)
