Well I think racial stereotypes are an industry-wide problem, so every time I see it happen I think it's lame. It's already bad enough that the vast majority of games have hunky buff white dudes, badass streetsmart black dudes, scantily clad women with breasts that would break their backs, and Asian kung fu masters and computer whizzes. That said, yeah this game isn't as bad as most and it's Nintendo. It's really hard to be offended by Nintendo. They're so friendly they can sneak this stuff in and I won't care. But I can understand why this would bother people. My post was more serious than I intended I guess. I played the first 4 matches, so I've only seen the first 4 intros. It's basically just "haha he's French and a sissy," "haha he's German and dumb," "haha he's gay," and "haha he's fat and eats a lot." And now that there's voice acting, you get to hear Doc and all his blackness. But I do think this game handles masculinity better than most games. Instead of being a giant steroid-driven beefcake of death, you're a scrawny kid who makes a living by beating the hell out of giant supermen. |
I never thought of them as malicious. The game was made by the japanese, and their own boxer who's name escapes me at the moment, is just as over the top as all the rest.
Stereotypes can be fun, so long as they don't go into that malicious territory. Inspector Clouseau from the Pink Panther would have been really boring if not for his over the top frenchness.
I didn't think you were raving mad about it, or anything. It's just weird the hubbub that things bring about now, especially with the web. The incident with RE5, and people screaming racism was, I think, the absolute peak of this insanity. Nobody seemed to mind that a bunch of spaniards got wasted in RE4.
With that said, the new punchout better have a transgendered midget or I'm going to be really upset.
