For Literature: Anything by Dostoevsky rules. Kafka has some pretty intense stuff. Dickens is usually fun. Jack London has a lot of very engaging stuff. Hemingway is always enjoyable to read.

More contemporary stuff: Gene Wolfe is incredible, mindblowing. Scott Lynch's books are really good, so are Daniel Abraham's. George RR Martin goes without saying. R. Scott Bakker writes well constructed fantasy with a philosophical edge. Neil Gaiman rules. Patrick Rothfuss only has one book out, but it might be my favorite ever. And I'll throw in a recommendation for Joe Abercrombie and Richard K. Morgan as well; both bad-ass authors.

I know you said books, but I like pretty much every book by those authors :p.

The Grapes of Wrath
For Whom the Bell Tolls
War and Peace
Great Expectations
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

I really love the entire Redwall Series. Spent the entire day as a kid, reading a book from start to finish.

Catch-22
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
A Tale of Two Cities

Right now I'm reading the Narnia books and I'm loving the crap out of them. I think I may actually prefer them to LotR.

The Bible (I read it for comical reasons, it's so bloody ridiculous).

The little prince (translated the title. It's really a child's book, but it's brilliant).

Then I don't read a lot of pure fiction. It's mostly put in partially with chess, bridge, or something else. Frankly, I find fact based books more interesting.

I've read Harry Potter, The Golden Compass, Eragon (series) and alikes, but they didn't really hit me as that great. (The Bible on the other hand! - That's class comedy!)
