Forums - General - Why is it more reasonable to believe in One Single Creator and not several?

More gods would make sense. I mean... none of us are born from masturbation. God needs to put his schlong in something too.

Jup... that oughtta offend at least one Christian. My work here is done. Super-atheist away!

Polytheism vs Monotheism

Is it just a historical coincidence that a large proportion of people scattered around the world, believe in a single God?
Why not several Gods or Goddesses?
And why is Thor, Zeus, Odin and Loki considered 'silly' by so many Christians and Muslims?

One flaw here.  Polytheistic religions believed in one creator as well.

Except possibly the Summerians.

The main difference between Christianity and say... Anicent Egyptian religion is just that the Christian god is... the angels just aren't called gods.

That and God is just so much more awesome then the angels... to where unlike other religions, god basically has no fear of being upseated.

Edit: No no wait... the Summerians had one creator too who created everything... though i think some things were created by the creations.

More to the point, how can people believe in their god? Even if we could prove god it would still be a 0.0000000001% chance you could prove a particular god.

Hey, it's a better chance then not picking a god.

A large portion of people actually do feel a connection with their particular god and often times believe in him because said god talks to them.

Like literally... and these are people that when studied do not have mental disorders.  So take it for whatever you want.

The way you worded this post seems to confirm what I said though. I don't know if that was your aim. But yeah, even if some people feel a connection there are still many people from many religions who feel connected to many individual gods.

Well by an abrahamic ideology, when all is considered, if you had two or more separate all powerful, all knowing, ulitimate beings then you may as well have one because they would effective be and act as one.

Thats not to say that any abrahamic religions actually beleive there is more than one god. Two ultimate beings would never disagree and how would you know that there are two if you cannot prove the existence of one?

Endure. In enduring, grow strong.

Kasz216 Your statement above was reversable (see blue edit) thus rendering your 'attempt' invalid/irrelevant.
No offense. This is after all a discussion.

Considering there are over a billion polytheist Hindu people in the world I don't think its necessarily any less reasonable to believe in a pantheon of Gods then a single entity.

Religion requires faith, reasonable doesn't enter into it really.

its because God has the ultimate power, He doesnt share it with others.

That was an answer to why you would pick a god.

As to why you would choose a monotheistic religion vs polytheistic...

my point was there is no such thing... not really.

Odin is the Highfather. and then there are weaker gods under him.  This is no different then there being God, and Angels under him.  Except the angels are now classfied as angels instead of gods.

It depends how you want to look at it.  There is a chance they are all right.  Yet there is still only one god.  Or there are many and they're all competing for believers.

Which by the way would be a kickass game.  Everyone gets a certain amount of "god" points and makes different preachers and messiahs and miracles and stuff and try and get the most people into "their" afterlife to win a cosmic bet.

It'd be like populus but less hands on.
