Forums - Sony - Phyre engine = Mars = 'Free' exclusive with only 3M Euro budget! Cool...

I was just reading an article on Gamasutra and it came out with some interesting stuff.

  • Mars is a PC/PS3 and something else, probably PS2/PSP.
  • Mars may cost very little to make in the end $3M Euro.
  • Mars is exclusive because of the attractiveness of the Phyre engine, both free and good?
  • Sony doesn't lock pure exclusivity in return for use of this engine.

The Phyre engine looks like it was worth it in attracting more creative low/mid level development. Im pretty happy to hear about this, since I love RPG games and this engine may have netted me another one to play.

Is Phyre Sony made, or is it made by another company for the PS3?

Sony made.

If it's not Sony I think it's Insomniac but Sony owns it.

The Phrye engine does not guarantee "console exclusivity." Collin Mcrae's Dirt is an example of a game based on the Phrye engine that appeared on the 360. So indirectly Sony supports Xbox development. I think it is likely that Sony restricts the "free" part of the license to PS3/PC.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Mars doesn't seem like a good game to me yet, but its good to see the potential of Phyre...

Aren't a bunch of exclusive PSN games based on that engine?

Hmm, maybe. I don't remember too well.

Both Flow and Flower are built on Phrye.  Apparently the procedural rendering offered in the Phrye engine is excellent with the grass in Flower being the best example.  Whenever I see a PS3/PC exclusive I suspect it is built on Phyre.

Thank you Squilliam good find as always...
