Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I hope Turkey don't ever become a member of the EU. Mass immigration will flood the rest of us.

Not necessarily.

From what I remember, individual agreements can be made with each new potential EU member. This means that a country must wait for a set number of years before they get to enjoy all of the 4 Freedoms. In the meantime Turkey could improve their own economy. This might take several decades though.

This happened before the 2004 enlargement of the European Union.
Several former eastern european countries had to wait for a while until they got to enjoy all of the Freedoms.

  • The free movement of goods
  • The free movement of persons (and citizenship), including free movement of workers, and freedom of establishment
  • The free movement of services
  • The free movement of capital
  • Sarkozy, the French President, is working for the establishment of a South Mediterranean 'Semi-Union' system, where North African nations are allowed to enjoy some of the freedoms (listed above) established by the EU.

Turkey may not be allowed to enter the EU, but they might be a part of the new system. Who knows?

Shortage of labour force hasn't been a problem for 30 years in the EU though. We simply don't need more ppl.

What about the fact that countries like the UK have, for the first time in our history, more pensioners than school children. Our ageing population means that our workforce is getting smaller, coupled with the economic boom we'll be getting over the next 25 years because of (as HappySqurriel pointed out) the rise of the E7, we're going to need a larger work force.

Turkey has a population of 71 million, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's a growing population - this could be a solution to the population problems that we're going to have in the future.

On another note, Turkey brings great trade access to SE Asia, and the acceptance of an Islamic nation into the EU could help its image in the South East.

@GamingChartzFTW - wasn't there also some limitations imposed on the freedom of movement of persons due to be removed by 2011.

How could the US possibly catch up when over the past decade, or so, the EU has been having greater growth than the US, so the gap is widening.

When Turkey eventually gets around to entering the EU, we will have a huge economic boost as well.

LOL! Because Turkey is such an economic powerhouse?

15th largest economy in the world does not have a good enough economy to join the EU? ... um, ok lol

...I'ld rather have China or India. Im sorry but Europes attitude (and history) with third world nations is a disaster. Its "economic policies" and "interests" always fuck up locals. Along with braindrain, unfair trade (subsidesed european farmers vs. unsubsidised poor african farmers? you've got to be kidding...wha? you're not? and Just how the hell do you expect African manufacturers to compete with European firms?), neocolonisation and all that other shit isnt worth it. Besides even if it happens the third worlds (more than half of the globes population) loyalty is with China and India after being treated like shit and ignored for so many years.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

    Good question.

I'm not sure. The thing I do know is that some countries protect their own labour markets from poor new members by making agreements bilaterally or unilaterally.
They are not allowed to do that forever though. At a certain point a member state will have to open up the labour market.

For how long is a nation allowed to 'protect' itself? I believe that is negotiable.

India and China are growing at an amazingly rapid rate and (in the not too distant future) they will hit a point where the growing consumer base in these countries will drive economic growth within these countries ... A feedback loop which will make these countries the largest and most important economies in the world.

China has an awesome economy... but India isn't doing that well.

You only said that because Pakistanis don't like Indians right

    I took this for Wikipedia:

A Goldman Sachs report predicts that "from 2007 to 2020, India’s GDP per capita will quadruple," and that the Indian economy will surpass the United States by 2043

And you said that because you don't like Pakistanis right?

These reports are pointless, many countries in the world have similar or better economies than India.
