Forums - General - The Most Influential Album of All Time revealed! Please Enter!

I think the most influential album of all time is Sgt. Pepper's, but then again, that was just a ripoff of Freak Out! by the Mothers, so I'm actually going to go with Freak Out! by the Mothers.

Thriller was a selection of incredible songs, but all it did as an album was put a bunch of incredible songs in a row. Freak Out! invented the concept album and changed the way people made albums. Now albums get intros and outros and have songs that share similar themes, or even song cycles or rock operas.

Very good points raised but the succes was unprecendented even for a black artist, there are too many great thing linked to the album aside from the songs e.g. motown 25, the music videos, 8grammys etc

I don't think that it was the most influential album of all time. As you just stated, it was influenced by other music that preceded it.

On the other hand, the Thriller album had groundbreaking videos that were highly influential to everyone. John Landis, one of the hottest directors at the time, directed the Thriller video. This type of thing was unheard of.

Thriller is undeniably a GREAT album. I normally do not like pop music at all, but I can tell you that I like every song that's on it (a lot). Off the Wall is also a really good album. It's not as good as Thriller, but I thought that I would bring it up since it's rarely ever mentioned.

Thriller is by far and away the most over-rated album ever. Not saying it isn't good. Just saying there are far more better albums, Sgt Pepper, Back in Black, Dark side of the moon, Paranoid, Led Zeppelin IV and so on

I am always surprised at one album that is never even considered in half the greatest album list, yet it is good enough to stand up against almost any album and that's Deep Purples Machine head

Thanks for the input, I agree nobody mentions off the wall because thriller was so popular. Do you still remember thriller mania?
