I don't think that it was the most influential album of all time. As you just stated, it was influenced by other music that preceded it.
On the other hand, the Thriller album had groundbreaking videos that were highly influential to everyone. John Landis, one of the hottest directors at the time, directed the Thriller video. This type of thing was unheard of.
Thriller is undeniably a GREAT album. I normally do not like pop music at all, but I can tell you that I like every song that's on it (a lot). Off the Wall is also a really good album. It's not as good as Thriller, but I thought that I would bring it up since it's rarely ever mentioned.
