Forums - Gaming - Output resolution on the back of 360 game boxes different from ps3's.

^^^ The PS3 upscales with a combination of hardware (vertical) and software (horizontal), as I recall. Frankly a lot of people would say the PS3's upscaling has better output than the hardware upscaler in the 360, especially for DVDs. Probably has something to do with a custom scaling algorithm that's not just built into a cheap off-the-shelf component.

That being said, if you tell a PS3 that a certain resolution is supported on your TV, but you don't like said resolution... why don't you just disable it as an option for your gaming?

The 360 scaler is very high quality and works 100% with all games. Upscaled DVD doesn't look all that good on the 360 because the playback software (not the scaler) is crap.

The 1080i/p software scaling quality on the PS3 is sometimes on par with the 360, but often it looks considerably worse. And half the PS3 game library doesn't support any kind of scaling at all. If I disable 720p in the video menu, then games like Valkyria Chronicles, Heavenly Sword, and Uncharted (PAL version), will only display at 480p. There's no way to force these games to display at 1080i/p.

Typically games that can be forced to run at 1080i/p (by disabling 720p in the video menu), looks blurry and low res. Games that list 1080i/p support at the back of the box tend to look fine.

Don't think that's true...

PS3 games list the native outputs on the back of the box, 360 just lists all of the ones the 360 can produce.

It says 1080i/p support at the back of the box on both Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Disgaea 3 in my PS3 collection. Yet AFAIK both games render at 720p only.

You are wrong.  Feylic is correct.  Ninja Gaiden Sigma WILL be upscaled to 1080p if you UNCHECK 720p as a display option.  Uncharted will do the same thing.  MS started adding the 1080p on the back of the boxes after Sony talked about native 1080p gaming for the PS3.

Only the native resolution matters for MOST HDTVs anyway.  The TV will upscale the image to it's native resolution. Example: If it's a 1080p TV, ALL signals are upscaled via the TV to 1080p.  The only people left out in the cold, from the console not upscaling, would be the people that were uninformed enough to buy a HD-Ready rear projection CRT TVs.

Uh, I suggest you go back and read what I wrote once more. I never said Sigma doesn't support 1080i/p, and I was talking about the PAL version of Uncharted which does not support 1080i/p in any way.

You do not want your TV to upscale the picture unless you're fond of input lag and shit image quality.

All HD CRT's manufactured before a certain date (as well as many newer sets) does not support 720p. Buying such a TV back when 720p didn't exist has nothing to do with being uninformed. Not to mention that HD CRT's still provide the best image quality money can buy, and the lightning fast response times make them especially well suited for gaming.

Many PS3 games do say 1080p on the back of the box when they are not natively rendered at that resolution, but I don't have any on hand to prove it

PS3 has more native 1080p games than X360. Every single X360 game can upscale up to 1080i/p because MS asks developers to work on it. Some PS3 games upscale to 1080p.

Lol, this is bullshit. I've set my PS3 output to 1080i and it looked EXACTLY like 720p (mainly because they are extremely similar). I didn't get any 480p.

Halo 3 has 1080p on the back of the box, but I am pretty sure it was 720p. Will all 360 games scale to 1080p?

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Technically, Halo 3 is 640p native...

Here is a list of all the native resolutions on most games for 360/ps3

Ill make a seperate thread as most people will be interested in viewing this
