Obviously this is an older interview, but it is very relevant to this discussion.  Many people on this thread have tried to claim that this is not an issue with the 360, but an issue with the television/display device.  Clearly from this you can see that it is related to the console.  I am not saying that all 360 games suffer from this, or that all PS3 games are free from screen tearing.

Exactly. When I referenced this article back on page 1 I pointed out that what made this article bothersome was that it is so old. The fact that this has been a problem since launch gives me a somewhat bitter view of MS and the devs who are doing it.

As somebody pointed out earlier I suspect vsync is turned off to try and create the best looking screenshots for marketing. Based on the performance hit I see on a PC I suspect that there would have to be a decent reduction in detail or framerate. The PS3 sacrificing frames (and sometimes graphics) for vsync seems to back that point up. I'm still glad I bought my 360 but I tend to prefer the direction Sony is leaning on this one. Just a matter of taste I guess.

Just thought I'd further iterate this.  It is a game specific issue, not console specific.  It is also not 360 games or multiplat game specific.  PS3 games have tearing as well.  Off hand I can think of Uncharted as a prime example.

Overall I guess I'd prefer the higher frame rate and tearing since I don't notice it and only saw it in one 360 game so far.  I guess my eyes aren't sensitive enough.  I have perfect vision and don't need glasses, but I do have those weird floater things and stare at LCD's all day, so who knows

Yes sorry, I was making a generalization. I totally realize that both systems support vsync and it is the choice of the devs as to using it or not. It just seems, based on what I'm hearing that for some reason (any clue?) PS3 games seem more likely to go with vsync and lower frames, while 360 goes with no vsync and higher frames. There must be some architectural advantage to doing it that way though, because it seems that trend extends to multiplats like RE5. My curiosity is sparked.

ive generally only seen it very rarely on some of my games. i dont own most of the games you mentioned, so i wont speak to them. But if you are having severe problems, perhaps there is an issue with both the tv and the games. the only game ive ever played with severe problems was mirrors edge on the ps3... which would definitely qualify as an "insane" amount, so i know it can happen with just the game though.

I wonder how bad the tearing is in KZ2. I seem to remember lots of possible tearing, and much more often than I saw in any 360 game thus far.

There's nothing about torn frames in all 5 videos and articles Digital Foundry made about KZ2. I read around that it is v-synced, but not from official sources. The only thing Digital Foundry pointed out are some rare framerate hiccups, made less evident by the advanced motion blur.

Basically I'd go with the "there's no tear" opinion, as I can't see why DF would not have pointed it out and measured it. It's part of their default assessment.

On the other side yes, it's evident in Uncharted when you quickly pan horizontally the camera in some points of the game.

You are probably right.  Killzone 2 just has a lot more loading hickups and things of that nature that I am sure I was confusing this with.

That can be said about most any game...

When I had my 360, I didnt notice it much at all, but thats probably because i played the Gears games alot and those games are basically flawless. A list of games where it happens most would help. It may also be your TV refresh rate.

Good idea:

Dead Rising- This one is the worst.

Mass Effect- OK unless there is lots of lighting- spinning the camera in an elevator with a couple lighting sources.

Blazing Angels- At times it can be almost overwhelming.

The Darkness- Not too bad, but its there.

GRAW- Quite a bit.

Those are the ones I can remember specifically off the top of my head but I think I have seen it in some form on most of my 360 games.

As for the TV I usually have my 360 hooked up to a 50 inch Sony rear projection TV via component cables. I did try it on my 36in 720p philips with the HDMI and noticed pretty much the same problems.

I never remember Dead Rising having Screen tearing, most of it is because of the TV,Project you are using.

and for anyone who dosent know what screen tearing is.

This

My ps3 does not really have screen tearing to be honest. but when i download a game for my 360 i have noticed that it does have worse screen tearing then the ps3. me being a pc gamer i tend to notice stuff like this and it bugs me. badly

And screen tearing is caused by the TV or what ever you use.

Come on guys. This is not a topic meant to start a flame war. Please. I can also confirm this is not my TV. I have tried it on 3 with various rez and cable configs. I think nightstalker is right and Im just very sensitive to this kind of thing.
