Mario, Sonic, Mega Man.
I guess one or more of those names came to mind when you read the title of this thread. These long lasting franchises have had countless games and spinoffs released in their long history and are still relevant today, although the latter two aren't as popular anymore as they once were. So which one of those three franchises is the most milked in gaming? Out of Nintendo, Sega and Capcom, who has the questionable honor of taking that title home?
The answer is none of them. Sony wins big time here. It's not even a contest. Their Singstar franchise has seen an enormous amount of titles in the past few years.
The following list was compiled with data from gamefaqs and a German videogame magazine which recently listed all Singstar releases in Germany (which also gave me the idea to this thread). I can't guarantee that the list is complete, because gamefaqs was missing a few of the German releases, so it's possible that some other more country specific games are missing as well. All games were released for the PS2, unless noted otherwise. That being said, here's the list:
- Singstar
- '80s
- '90s
- ABBA (also on PS3)
- Amped
- Anthems
- Apres-Ski Party
- Bollywood
- Boybands vs. Girlbands
- Country
- Deutsch Rock-Pop
- Deutsch Rock-Pop Vol. 2
- Die Toten Hosen
- Hottest Hits
- Italian Party
- La Edad de Oro del Pop Espanol
- Latino
- Legends
- Norsk pa Norsk
- Operacion Triunfo
- Party
- Party Hits
- Pop
- Pop Vol. 2
- Pop Hits
- Pop Hits Vol. 2
- Pop Hits Vol. 3
- R&B
- Rock Ballads
- Rocks!
- Schlager
- Singalong with Disney
- Summer Party
- Svenska Hits Schlager
- The Dome
- top.it
- Turkish Party
- Queen (also on PS3)
- Singstar (PS3)
- Vol. 2 (PS3)
- Vol. 3 (PS3)
- Pop Edition (PS3, going to be released later this month)
It's worth noting that these are all games that share the same gameplay that Singstar is known for, none of these are spinoffs (at least to my knowledge, corrections are welcome). In May 2009, Singstar will celebrate its five year anniversary. During those five years (60 months) the franchise had a new release about every 1.5 months on average. Again, this is without any spinoffs.
Discuss.
